13 Rules Of Gunfighting Everyone Should Know

Have a gun? Here are some words to the wise. It's sound shooting advice from various Concealed Carry Instructors (my son being among them). If you own a gun, you will appreciate this. If not, you should get one and learn how to use it.

However, it is my personal belief that first and foremost you must always remember that situational awareness and conflict avoidance should be on your mind at all times when 'carrying' ... using your weapon (deadly force) is the very last thing you should want to do and you should do so ONLY after the deadly threat not only cannot be avoided - it is your last and only option to save your life and/or your family and/or innocents around you.

Via the August 15, 2012 piece at Business Insider by CJ Grisham (hat tip - Thomas Moore Law Center):

A) Guns have only two enemies: rust and politicians.

B) It's always better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

C) Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not you.

D) Never let someone or something that threatens you get inside arms length.

E) Never say "I've got a gun." If you need to use deadly force, the first sound they hear should be the safety clicking off.

F) The average response time of a 911 call is 23 minutes, the response time of a .357 is 1400 feet per second.

G) The most important rule in a gunfight is: Always win -- cheat if necessary.

H) Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets ... You may get killed with your own gun, but he'll have to beat you to death with it, cause it'll be empty.

I) If you're in a gun fight:
If you're not shooting, you should be loading.
If you're not loading, you should be moving.
If you're not shooting, moving or loading, you're probably dead.

J) In a life and death situation, do something ... It may be wrong, but do something!

K) If you carry a gun, people call you paranoid. Nonsense! If you have a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about?

L) You can say 'stop' or 'alto' or any other word, but a large bore muzzle pointed at someone's head is pretty much a universal language.

M) You cannot save the planet, but you may be able to save yourself and your family.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading," -- Thomas Jefferson

Here's some more advice. If you don't have a gun, buy one (from a gun dealer) and get qualified training on how to use it and on the laws in your state on when you can use it ... your life and that of your family may some day depend on it. Also, if you don't have a concealed firearms license, take a concealed carry course and ... get one. In Florida, if you're ex-military you just need your DD214 ... if you're not ex-military, take the training course for the license. Then just make an appt. at the Dept. of Agriculture, show up on time, then you get your picture taken, fingerprints taken, sign a couple of papers, and you're out of there in 10 minutes. 3-4 weeks later you get your license in the mail.

Practice shooting as often as possible, and make it a habit of carrying your weapon everywhere you can legally do so (Video). Keep it loaded, and do carry a round in the chamber. In the event of a deadly threat you likely won't have time to load a round in to the chamber before having to dispense the threat.

Tip: Watch the USCCA (United States Concealed Carry Association) instructional video: "How to Avoid The Top Ten Concealed Carry Mistakes." And I do suggest joining the USCCA - its benefits include excellent education ... and concealed carry insurance.
