Obama vs. The Self-Made Man

Topics: Political News and commentaries

Rich Lowry's piece today at NRO gets right to the heart of President Obama's "you didn't do it on your own ... "Somebody else made that happen" argument, stolen directly from the loony Massachusetts Democrat Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren. It is indeed an argument for socializing the rewards of a free economy. It denies pride of place to individual achievement and creativity. Pace Obama, roads and bridges aren't the key ingredients to business success. All of us drive on the roads; very few of us have the vision and determination to become successful entrepreneurs:

The Obama theory of entrepreneurship is that behind every successful businessman, there is a successful government. Everyone is helpless without the state, the great protector, builder, and innovator. Everything is ultimately a collective enterprise. Individual initiative is only an ingredient in the more important work when "we do things together."
