Obama's Chief of Staff: No More Compromise on HHS Contraception and Abortifacient MandateTopics: Political News and commentaries
Fox News reports that despite renewed statements of concern by Catholic leaders and lawmakers, the Obama administration is done negotiating and will finalize its plan requiring insurance companies to provide free contraception to women working and studying at religious institutions (emphasis mine):
Jacob Lew told "Fox News Sunday" that the compromise offered last week to address objections by the Catholic Church is clear and consistent with the president's "very deep belief that a woman has a right to all forms of preventive health care, including contraception."What is "clear" here is that Barack Obama has complete disdain and disregard for religious freedom, Christianity, and the Constitution. He's, as Mark Stein suggests, gone Henry XVIII:
"The president of the United States has decided to go Henry VIII on the Church's medieval ass. Whatever religious institutions might profess to believe in the matter of 'women's health,' their pre-eminences, jurisdictions, privileges, authorities and immunities are now subordinate to a one-and-only supreme head on earth determined to repress, redress, restrain and amend their heresies. ..."As Doug Powers aptly notes, Obama telegraphed where he'd be coming from on this (and related) issues in a 2008 speech making it "clear" which side must come out on top in a dispute between the State and the Church in order for society as a whole to be better off.
According to Obama, what it comes down to is - in a diverse democratic society, any proposed policy must justify itself via the benefits he and his far-left constituency see, rather than via arguments that may only hold true to people who have a particular religious view that he disagrees with. In other words, in Obama's world, Obama knows best and to hell with the Constitution. He has no problem going where no president has ever gone before him - attacked the Constitutional right of religious freedom for sake of what's best for the collective "all" - as determined by him and him alone.
However, as pointed out at The Weekly Standard in it's 'No Precedent for the Government Ordering Private Companies to Offer a Product for Free'... "This issue goes well beyond the issue of religious freedom, and it highlights the unprecedented threats to limited government and liberty that Obamacare poses to all Americans, from the most devout Catholic to the most committed atheist. Americans are faced with two choices: politicized medicine and an unprecedented consolidation of power and control in Washington, or repeal."
And as Pittsburgh Bishop David Zubik put it in a letter published in his diocesan newspaper, on Jan. 20, " ...the Obama administration answered you and me. The response was very simple: 'To hell with you.'" Bishop Zubik went on to say:
"This is government by fiat that attacks the rights of everyone ... At no other time in memory or history has there been such a governmental intrusion on freedom. It undermines the whole concept and hope for healthcare reform by inextricably linking it to the zealotry of pro-abortion bureaucrats. The mandate would require the Catholic Church as an employer to violate its fundamental beliefs concerning human life and human dignity .... It is really hard to believe that it happened."Unfortunately, it has indeed happened and it's very unlikely to change unless Barack Obama is voted out of office in November.
People of faith and all who value the Constitution need to recall that, just as Paul Kengorall writes at Crisis Magazine, all of this was so painfully predictable back in November 2008, when a majority of professing Roman Catholics voted Barack Obama president. This time all people of faith need to remember that you reap what you sow.
