"Semper Romney"?
Topics: Political News and commentariesAnyone here believes in predestination? All throughout the primaries, Republicans, seeking to nominate anyone other than wimpy flip-flopping RINO Romney, seem almost to have been chasing after an elusive conservative 'Red Pimpernel': "They seek him here, they seek him there. Those Republicans seek him everywhere..."
Yet, it seems that no matter how much Republicans rebel against their fate, how much they wriggle and frantically squirm against it, in the end, their fate will inexorably be "semper Romney"; much as the fate of the Cuban people for the last half-century has been "semper Fidelis" - and no, I am not talking about Marines!
Going over a recent article: "Fractured US Conservatives Seek A 'Not-Romney'" that appeared on Zimbio.com last January 5th, the writer very perceptively points this out, quoting Political Scientist Matt Dickinson of Middlebury College, in Vermont, as observing:
"'There's still a possibility that conservatives will rally around a 'Not-Mitt' candidate, but time may soon start running short...'""'And that person will have to make the case, in a credible manner, that they can win this election. I don't think that this is a case where Republicans are willing to go down, flags waving, for the cause,' he added."
The article stresses:
"Some Republican insiders worry about a 'circular firing squad, that bloodies the eventual nominee to take on the otherwise highly vulnerable President Barack Obama in the November 6 election."
Want any more bloodied a "circular firing squad" than those damn Republican presidential debates that have served as nothing but an amusement, and fodder, for the Democrats and the left, all but too happy to see all these Republican presidential wanna-be's shooting themselves and each other repeatedly in the foot while they sat and watched?
It goes on to point out that:
"...Romney suffers from lingering doubts about his conservative convictions -- stoked by a largely centrist record as governor of Massachusetts -- and has never broken past 30 percent support among Republicans nationwide."
observing that:
"And conservatives, or at least voters not prepared to rally behind the candidate who clearly has the backing of the party's Washington establishment, have in fact been rallying behind a 'not-Mitt' for a year, giving different candidates brief surges to the top of the back before falling back."
the article poignantly quotes Newt Gingrich as remarking:
"'I find it amazing the news media continues to say he's the most electable Republican when he can't even break out in his own party,' former House speaker Newt Gingrich, one of those candidates, said Wednesday.""'The fact is Governor Romney in the end has very limited appeal in a conservative party,' said Gingrich, whose support crumbled under a barrage of attack advertisements, much of it from a group allied with Romney."
Unfortunately the article's assessment is spot-on. I have no particular love-lost for Newt Gingrich and all his baggage, but it was so invigorating to finally see some conservative on national television not mince words and have the "cojones" to tell CNN and John King, to their faces, that they are nothing but a leftist propaganda machine for the Democrats, and but yet another mainstream media Obama lapdog, with a political agenda and an axe to grind - not the impartial and professional journalistic institution and journalists they fancy themselves to be in their liberal "Elitism", and that indeed they are "despicable"! It was indeed a breath of fresh air - away from all the stagnant Romney-styled politically correct timidity and cowering!
As we see the Republican field narrow to "Moe, Larry, and Curly" (not to mention Ron Paul - "Shemp"), it almost makes you hanker for the "Good Ole' Days" of colorful (no pun intended) Herman Cain with his "Pizza Diplomacy", and his "9,9,9," plan with which he would have addressed all the ills, and solved all the problems, of the world! Though many times not representative of reality "simplicity" has such an allure, it is so appealing...
If only Papa John would enter the race! Then, even though it would be $11.00, instead of "9,9,9", maybe he could appeal to fickle independent voters and to Democrats by offering an environment-friendly "Green" pizza, for eleven bucks, made with "recycled ingredients", and guaranteed to produce lower "greenhouse gases" emissions after eating it! The Democrats would just love it - especially Sheryl Crow!
At this rate, it seems that the "Prince of Bel Air"...err, I mean, Washington, and his lovely wife Michelle 'Antoinette' ("Let them eat cake" - of course, bought with food stamps) will be "Movin' On Up" for yet another four years, and as a result, not only "there goes the neighborhood" on Pennsylvania Avenue, but the country will wind up looking more like Sanford & Son's junkyard in the end!
Oh, well! "Que sera, sera..." Apparently there must be something to fate and predestination, because it seems Republicans cannot escape Romney and their fate, and neither America four more disastrous years of Obama...
