Re: Grover Norquist's 'Unsavory' Connections

Topics: Political News and commentaries

I've never thought of Americans for Tax Reform founder Grover Norquist as a conservative, just a typical Islamist-appeasing liberal that happens to believe in tax reform. This week Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va. took on the increasingly controversial political activist, an influential figure in the conservative movement famous for his "no tax increase pledge," by taking to the House floor and making it clear that Norquist is a mainstream conserservative-in-claim-only and pointed out Norquists "unsavory" connections that are anathema to conservatives. Wolf's key points:

  • he has ties to known terrorist financiers Abdurahman Alamoudi and Sami Al-Arian;
  • he supports the Ground Zero mosque;
  • he has advocated for transferring Guantanamo detainees to U.S. soil;
  • he has lobbied on behalf of Fannie Mae;
  • he has represented the Internet gambling industry.

All of these are liberal-progressive positions. And as Wolf said in his sharp attack recorded on C-SPAN, "Simply put, I believe Mr. Norquist is connected with or has profited from a number of unsavory people and groups out of the mainstream" (ergo undeserving of having any influence in the conservative movement)
