Video: Tea Party Teen Wows Debate Audience With Awesome Question (Updated)
Topics: Political News and commentariesSeventeen year-old Tyler Hinsley's simple question pretty well sums up what the Tea Party's all about. And the answer would say much about what we need to know about the candidates ... if and when a candidate actually answers it: "Out of every dollar that I earn, how much do you think that I 'deserve' to keep?"
As I note below in comments, this is certainly not a trick question, or one that's difficult to answer. The key to the answer is given in the question itself: "... out of every dollar that I earn, how much do you think that I 'deserve' to keep?". A conservative's response should be something along the lines of "You 'deserve' to keep every cent that you earn. The government is only entitled to collect in taxes what it needs to perform its legitimate functions as specified in the Constitution."
President Obama and his fellow Democrats stand for the opposing view - that you deserve whatever is left over after they've taxed you for whatever the government needs to pay for the societal priorities they deem appropriate.
The difference between these two views lies at the core of issues to be decided in 2012. How big should government be, how can it help the economy and jobs grow (that helps me earn my own money), and how much of my earnings am I going to have left over after the government takes money from my earnings to satisfy its appetite for my money!
Look for this question in the next debate. Paul Ryan would have no problem answering it, but he's not running. As for those that are running ... hopefully they do better than Huntsman did.
