Hyscience comments, email, and privacy policiesTopics: Political News and commentaries
As of late, certain commenters have been ignoring the fact that commenting on a blog post is a privilege, not a right. Ad hominem (personal) attacks and highly inappropriate rants and comments that contribute nothing of value to discourse on a post's content or the well-intentioned and civil imput of a fellow commenter have gotten completely out of hand, necessitating the need to establish and publish a statement of this blog's policies on comments, email and privacy.
Comments to Hyscience posts will be continued to be welcome, including comments that express different points of view. However, they must be civil and reasonably nonprofane (roughly PG-13). Although we recognize that a reasonable amount of snark is an essential part of the blogosphere, ad hominem attacks on Hyscience posters and/or on one's fellow commenters are strongly discouraged and may result in the comment being deleted, the offender's IP being banned, or both.
We reserve the absolute right to delete or edit comments at our discretion, which may sometimes seem arbitrary despite our inclination and efforts to act reasonably. If you believe one of our edits has so changed your meaning that you'd rather not have the comment published at all, let us know by email ("contact button" in header) and we'll delete it outright.
Commenters are not required to use a valid email or real name on their comments. However, if one chooses not to use a valid email, we'll have no way of contacting you about your comment other than by a reply in a subsequent comment on that same post if we choose to do so.
Emails are always welcome, although they should be directed specifically to the Hyscience poster or to something directly related to this blog. We skim all incoming email, eventually, but please do not take offense if we don't always reply.
In general, we reserve the right to treat emails sent to us as implying the sender's consent for us to republish their contents on Hyscience at our discretion, but we will never publish the sender's name without specific permission, and in practice we usually ask confirmation before publishing if the sender didn't make a preference clear in the original email.
Please be advised that the fact that we may have cited and/or linked to some external source emphatically does NOT imply that we vouch for, embrace, endorse, or agree with that source in whole or in part. Nor do we undertake any responsibility for the accuracy or other appropriateness of links, references, or statements made by my commenters. While we generally make an effort to at least skim those comments, we disclaim any commitment or obligation to respond to them or to otherwise vet them. In particular, we do not uniformly screen links or URLs from our comments to check for objectionable or dangerous content, and we disclaim any responsibility for consequential damage to your computer or your psyche, so we advise readers to follow them at their own peril and to use their good judgment.
Anyone having a specific complaint or objection about a specific link or comment is welcome to contact us by email (i.e. "contact button" in header).
These comment, email and privacy policies have been heavily borrowed from BeldarBlog's policies (the online journal of a crusty longwinded trial lawyer, bemused observer of politics, and Internet dilettante) posted on September 05, 2004
