Good News: U.S. Born al-Qaeda Leader in Yemen Killed

Topics: Political News and commentaries, Understanding Islam

CBS News reports that Anwar al-Awlaki, the American born al Qaeda leader, was killed this morning in Yemen in a joint operation between the CIA and U.S. Special Forces. This has been a long time coming - his killing is way past due.

WASHINGTON - The same U.S. military counterterrorism unit that got Osama bin Laden used a drone and jet strike in Yemen on Friday to kill the U.S.-born cleric suspected of inspiring or helping plan numerous attacks on the United States, including the Christmas 2009 attempt to blow up a jetliner, U.S. and Yemeni officials said.

Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born radical Islamic preacher who rose to the highest level of al Qaeda's franchise in Yemen, was killed in a CIA-directed strike upon his convoy, carried out with the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command's firepower, according to a counterterrorist official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence.

Al-Awlaki had been under observation for three weeks while they waited for the right opportunity to strike, one U.S. official said.

As Aaron Goldstein points out at American Spectator, Awlaki's death is well-deserved - he earned it through his jihadist hatred of his own country and its citizens:
Awlaki, a jihadist who spoke fluent English, was the driving force behind the Fort Hood Massacre in November 2009, the attempted bombing of Northwest Flight 253 on Christmas Day 2009 as well as the attempted bombing of Time Square in May 2010. Nidal Malik Hasan, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab and Faisal Shahzad all had direct contact with Awlaki either in person or over the Internet. It is also well worth noting that two of the 9/11 hijackers attended his sermons in Virginia (as did Hasan). The two 9/11 hijackers in question, Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Mihdhar were both on American Airlines Flight 77 which crashed into the Pentagon. It is believed that Awlaki either had a role in the attacks of September 11, 2001 or was at the very least aware that they were being planned.
And as for having captured him instead of sending him to his just reward:
... one could make an argument that we could have learned a great deal about al Qaeda operations from Awlaki had we captured him instead of killing him. But where would they have put the American-born jihadist? Guantanamo? Given his U.S. citizenship, the Left would have demanded a civilian trial, so it's probably just as well that Awlaki has arrived in that special place in hell reserved for him.
Rumor has it (from 'high' authority) that awaiting Awlaki in that "special place in hell" Goldstein speaks of is 72 virgins ... all of whom look like Helen Thomas:

Meanwhile, Hamas-linked CAIR is all bent out of shape over the killing of Awlaki ... they're suddenly concerned over the "constitutional issues" of killing the terrorist "without due process" (as for constitutional issues such as free speech - not so much)

And, as expected, the lefty loons at the ACLU are all bent out of shape over it too.

Complain as Islamists like CAIR and liberal-progressives like those at the ACLU may, the fact is that the SOB got the only "due process" he deserved - a missile up his *ss!
