Big Amnesty Push Coming

Topics: Immigration and Border Issues

Via James Antle III over at Amspecblog, it's being widely reported that President Obama is ready for another round of comprehensive immigration reform (often referred to by the center-right as 'shamnesty'). But it is less clear whether he actually believes he has the political capital, post-bin Laden, to get legislation passed or he merely wants the political benefit of appearing to try.

As Antle points out, the USA Today story linked above quotes Janet Murguia of the National Council of La Raza complaining that their expectations haven't been met on immigration policy and also Mark Kirkorian of the Center for Immigration Studies pointing out that if the DREAM Act failed it will be hard to pass wider-reaching legislation.

Meanwhile, the GOP is unfazed by Obama's plans, and with the GOP in control of the House ... the chances of Obama getting through his 'shamnesty' plan is essentially zero. Then there's also the fact that the president couldn't get his version of immigration reform passed when he had large Democratic majorities in the House and Senate because of strong bipartisan opposition, which makes it even more unlikely he will succeed anytime soon
