Re: Atlas Shrugged

Topics: Political News and commentaries

On Tax Day we posted this mash-up video from the folks at FreedomWorks that did what the filmmakers of Atlas Shrugged purposefully avoided, which is to cast President Obama in a lead role by using his own words. Barack Obama's latest campaign speech policy address is a perfect fit and the connection between Obama and the film is made perfectly clear in the mash-up. The parallel is stunning. (Hat tip - Ed Morrissey):

As Morrissey points out (be sure to read his review of the film, here), this film would likely have not resonated nearly as well three years ago, or ten years ago, or perhaps not any time in the 54 years since Ayn Rand published her novel.

The sense of crisis in the movie would have seemed too far from the experience of most Americans; likewise, the sense of aggressive, populist redistributionism would have looked hyperbolic and contrived. If this isn't the perfect moment for this film, then it's as close as I'd like to see it in my lifetime.
In the below video, Reason TV looks behind the scenes of the film, speaking to cast, crew, and commentators:

In case you haven't yet seen the film, here's the trailer:

See the film, read the book (best to have read the book first) ... and you won't be able to miss how perfect the timing is. By the way, if you haven't already read the book, at the very least read the Cliffsnotes on the book ... before seeing the movie.

As pertinent as Rand's novel was when she wrote it, Barack Obama's administration has made it much more so ... one could even say it's an appeal from freedom from people like Barack Obama and people like him. But be aware that there's a dark side to the objectivism of Ayn Rand and her Atlas Shrugged ... some say that it's godless, self-centered, materialistic, anti-Christian, and anti-American.
