Rebels Yell 'Allahu Akbar' As Libyan War Plane Shot Down over Benghazi (Updated)

Topics: Political News and commentaries

I'v been concerned for some time now that the Libyan "pro-democracy movement" is likely more about Islamism and less about democracy, although I'm certain that whatever the case ... Muammar Gaddafi deserves to be overthrown. The real bottom line is, are we helping to bring about a truly secular movement of a people seeking freedom from a brutal dictator ... or are we helping to usher in an Islamist government ... a next Iran like possibly Egypt?

Today, Dan Riehl offers up evidence (from The Telegraph) that it just may be more the latter than the former:

Okay. I'm not exactly buying that a rag tag band of rebels shot down a fighter jet over Benghazi, at least not without someone providing some serious weaponry. What I really wonder is, who may have special forces on the ground helping them out?

Also, given the thoughts that a crowd shouting "Allahu Akbar" provokes, I can't claim to not be concerned about the nature of some of these rebel forces. Are they freedom fighters, or Islamists? And should we be helping them if it's the latter?

Libyan rebels shot down the aircraft that was bombing their eastern stronghold, with the opposition accusing Muammar Gaddafi of ignoring the ceasefire and launching an air and sea assault. The Libyan government has denied that their forces are involved in any military action in or around the eastern city.

If it's indeed the latter, what in the world is the West doing getting involved in Libya?

Update: Turns out that indeed, Obama has put the U.S. on the same side as al-Qaeda:

Statements of support for Libya's revolution by al-Qaeda and leading Islamists have led to fears that military action by the West might be playing into the hands of its ideological enemies.
