Hillary Wants to Arm Libyan Rebels

Topics: Libya, Political News and commentaries

The New York Times reports that the Obama administration is engaged in a fierce debate over whether to supply weapons to the rebels in Libya. Apparently on the one hand there's the voices of reason and common sense (my description, not the NYT's) that are fearful that providing arms would deepen American involvement in a civil war and that some fighters may have links to Al Qaeda ... while on the other hand there's the voices of those like Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that lack such attributes and believe we should consider giving weapons to people that have fought against and killed Americans:

The debate has drawn in the White House, the State Department and the Pentagon, these officials said, and has prompted an urgent call for intelligence about a ragtag band of rebels who are waging a town-by-town battle against Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, from a base in eastern Libya long suspected of supplying terrorist...

Meanwhile, Egypt has already begun shipping arms to the rebels in Libya which is no real surprise given the Muslim Brotherhood's new influence with the Egyptian military and the rebels' ties with al-qaeda.
