Hillary To Congress: Obama Would Ignore Your War Resolutions

Topics: Libya, Political News and commentaries

Because, like with everything else ... they know best, right?

[...] The White House would forge ahead with military action in Libya even if Congress passed a resolution constraining the mission, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said during a classified briefing to House members Wednesday afternoon.
In an update at the above TPM link, Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA), who asked Clinton about the War Powers Act during a classified briefing, said Clinton and the administration are sidestepping the measure's provisions giving Congress the ability to put a 60-day time limit on any military action.
"They are not committed to following the important part of the War Powers Act, " he told TPM in a phone interview. "She said they are certainly willing to send reports [to us] and if they issue a press release, they'll send that to us too."
This is just the latest Obama administration circumvention of the law and is more than adequate proof that the Admininistration believe it can, with impunity, ignore any law or court ruling that doesn't fit their leftist liberal-progressive ideology and agenda.

In the case of Libya, it's as Chris Queen has pointed out... much of the motivation behind Obama's Libya policy stems from from the ideology of Samantha Power, the hard-Left humanitarian activist who has been the president's Director for Multilateral Affairs at the National Security Council since 2009 (and, incidentally, the wife of Obama's "Regulatory Czar" Cass Sunstein). Power is the woman behind the curtain in terms of Obama's policy on Libya, but a look at what she advocates reveals a troubling agenda.

Power has advocated a foreign policy that can easily be described as what Stanley Kurtz calls "humanitarian interventionist." Power and other activists like her seek to build American foreign policy around merely stepping into situations in the name of preventing genocide and other humanitarian aims. This type of foreign policy relies heavily on international law and multilateralism.
As Queen goes on to note in his piece, this type of foreign policy is the reason behind Obama's actions in Libya and the timing of them. While this type of foreign policy agenda might in some small way make sense to some people in a situation like the one in Libya, it is absolutely dangerous as the basis for an entire foreign policy. And make no mistake about it, Samantha Power and her supporters have Israel in their sights as a target for American military intervention on humanitarian grounds, as made perfectly clear in this exchange in an interview Power gave with Harry Kreisler, director of the Institute for International Studies at the University of California, Berkeley in 2002:

Scary! And given what we're seeing today from the Administration, it leaves little doubt that they will continue to ignore any law or court ruling that doesn't fit their leftist liberal-progressive ideology and multilateralist agenda.
