Obama Administration Supports Racist Akaka Bill

Topics: Political News and commentaries

Eric Holder and Ken Salazar have sent letters to Sens. Reid andMcConnell, expressing the Obama administration's "strong support" for the Akaka bill. But, as Roger Clegg aptly notes over at NRO, that's no surprise ... since (a) the bill is entirely consistent with the administration's decidedly un-colorblind approach to civil rights, and (b) Senator Obama supported the bill when he was in Congress:

Still, the letters are surprising, in that they make no attempt to address the bill's overwhelming and fundamental constitutional problems, instead assuming the conclusion by arguing that, since Indians have Indian tribes, therefore all "indigenous groups" should have an Indian tribe.

Actually, maybe this isn't so surprising, since the constitutional objections to the bill are really unanswerable.

On the other hand, since when did Eric Holder and Barack Obama ever consider themselves constrained by a little thing like the Constitution?
