Video: Gingrich Dismantles Pelosi's Nonsensical 'Liberal Math'

Topics: Political News and commentaries

In a battle of food stamps and unemployment checks vs paychecks, Gingrich draws a clear distinction between Democrats and Republicans by calling the Dems the party of foodstamps and the GOP the party of paychecks. Not only does Gingrich deride Pelosi's nonsensical "liberal math" but he also underscores how the Democrats have inserted massive uncertainties into the business environment and killed job growth for much longer than necessary in a post-recession period. The contrast is striking, and sets out a clear choice for the future of America (hat tip - Ed Morrissey):

As for Pelosi's insistance that food stamps and unemployment stimulate the economy, and claims that every dollar spent in food stamps returns $1.79 to the economy, her argument erroneously assumes that the $1 food stamp in question was somehow magically plucked off a "food-stamp tree" at no cost to the government, rather than costing the full dollar plus the administrative costs of distribution and accountability. And as Ed Morrissey explains, even then, that dollar won't generate a 79% ROI as it travels through the retail sector; if that were true, investors would put their money into nothing else.

Ed's complete debunking of Pelosi's claim can be read here, where you can also see the video of Pelosi's liberal math in her own words.

For a contrarian view, the Wall Street Journal explained Pelosi's "liberal math" back in 2009, although it failed to take into account the fact that the $1.00 came from the taxpayers in the first place (in reality it reroutes capital from production to non-production), nor does it take into account the other economic factors addressed by Ed that clearly make Pelosi's claim a "Straw-Man" argument.
