Center for Freedom and Prosperity video shows 'tax hikes not needed to balance budget'
Topics: Political News and commentariesDan Mitchell of the Center for Freedom and Prosperity completely debunks the statist claim that the federal budget can only be balanced through massive tax hikes, and he makes it abundantly clear in this must-watch video that there's only one reason to hike taxes - to give politicians in Washington more money to spend on a never ending number of programs and expansion of government - period. There's simply no other reason.
Using numbers from the Congressional Budget Office, the video shows that the budget can be balanced without any dramatic cuts (though it would be a good idea to sharply reduce the burden of government spending). All lawmakers need to do is limit spending growth and allow revenues to catch up. Under a hard spending freeze, for instance, the budget would be balanced by 2016. And if spending is limited to 2%, the budget would be balanced by 2020. And that's with the Bush tax cuts still in place.
As Ed Morrissey puts it: "The only reason to raise taxes is to allow Congress to spend more ... which is the real reason for our massive deficits. It's akin to giving free heroin to a junkie."
