Re: The Buckley Rule (The Lombardi Rule is now in effect)

Topics: Political News and commentaries

John F. Di Leo writes at Illinois Review:

Journalist Charles Krauthammer has challenged the wisdom of the Christine O'Donnell nomination, in a well-argued, conventional-wisdom-tinted column entitled "The Buckley Rule." The thesis is simple, and makes sense: WFB's default candidate selection process for National Review was always to support, in any race, the most conservative candidate who can win.

And Bill Buckley was wrong.

Read it all here ...

As Di Leo goes on to make abundantly clear, compromise should only be one of the tools in our toolbox, nothing more... but for far too long, for too many in the GOP, compromise has been a sacrament. We need to get our priorities in order, and this amazing year of economic upheaval, energized activists, and engaged electorate is just the year to do it.

For our take-home message, we need only look to William A. Jacobson at Legal Insurrection, who reminds us that the primaries are now over and to forget the Buckley Rule - The Lomabardi Rule is now in effect:

"The object is to win fairly, by the rules - but to win."
So [names of conservative blogs and pundits still dumping on O'Donnell deleted], get over it and get to work defeating Democratic rubber-stamp hack Chris Coons.

Because, as Hillyer says, "[w]e are fighting for our country here."

And winning that fight in November is all that matters.

As for Hillyer's point, we are indeed "fighting for our country here," and if we don't take back America doesn't take back at least the House in November and stop Barack Obama and the Democrats' socialist, ever-expanding-big government, freedom-robbing, agenda, we very well could be loosing our last chance to do so.
