Democrats moving ahead with reconciliation to resurrect Obamacare?

Topics: Political News and commentaries

In what amounts to breaking news, Hugh Hewitt writes:

GOP Senate Whip Jon Kyl was a guest on my show Thursday and reported that Congressional Democrats have indeed decided to use reconciliation to resurrect the remains of Obamacare, despite Massachusetts, despite the public's continuing and still growing dislike of the bill, and despite the jam-down ultra-partisanship such a naked power play and perversion of Senate rules that such an approach entails. The transcript of our conversation is here.
The reconciliation process will require the House to pass the Senate legislation unchanged but would give the House an opportunity to make some substantive modifications that would only need 51 Senate votes for approval. And as Hugh goes on to point out in his piece, if passed after Massachusetts, Obamacare would become the single most contemptuous act by a Congress towards voters in American history. It is also highly likely to result in a firestorm of angry voters that will make their feelings abundantly clear in 2010.

Changes being considered by Democrats under the plan for reconciliation are similar to those agreed to among House and Senate leaders in their closed door White House meetings earlier this month. Politico has a list of the changes under consideration, here. Additionally, AllahPundit notes that the bill in its original form was projected as costing $849 billion over 10 years, but the "fix" in reconciliation is expected to tack on another $300 billion in programs in order to placate Pelosi - resulting in a bill in excess of the magical $1 trillion mark.

The political fortunes for the Democrats in 2010 are about go from bad to worse very quickly.
