On Kennedy Catholicism

Topics: Political News and commentaries

Clearly, as Daniel J. Flynn provides in his excellent piece on Kennedy's Catholicism at The American Spectator, there's sound reasons that leaving aside Ted Kennedy's friction with the church over abortion, gay marriage, and other hot-button issues, the pope chose to add no further fuel to the public relations juggernaut that has dominated the American news cycle for almost a week by replying to Kennedy's letter in his own name. As one Vatican official bluntly told Time, "Here in Rome, Ted Kennedy is nobody. He's a legend with his own constituency. If he had influence in the past, it was only with the Archdiocese of Boston, and that eventually disappeared too."
