Obama's approval in free fall

Topics: Political News and commentaries

As John Hinderaker notes at Powerline, the American people's disenchantment with Barack Obama and his administration continues to grow. In today's Rasmussen Daily Presidential Tracking Poll report, Obama reaches the lowest point yet recorded: a (-14) on Rasmussen's "approval index." Only 27 percent now "strongly approve" of Obama's performance, while 41 percent "strongly disapprove."

Here's the chart showing what clearly appears to be the beginning of a free fall for Obama's approval:

As John goes on to note in his commentary, the radical measures that Obama tried to ram through Congress in the early weeks of his administration have likely mobilized a solid core of opposition against which the President will have to contend for the rest of his term. The likelihood that those who now strongly disapprove of Obama's performance will ever become "approvers," even if Obama changes course, is remote, and his approval index clearly does not appear to have bottomed out.

Interestingly, Zogby's August 20 report, in basic agreement with Rasmussen'sAugust 23rd report, showed Obama tanking with 50.5 percent disapprove of the job Barack Obama is doing and of greatest concern to Obama may well be his decline among all-important independent voters. Just 37.5 percent of self-identified independents say they approve of how Obama is handling the presidency. That compares with 59.2 percent of independents who disapprove. As suggested by Hinderaker, this is unlikely to change for the better.
