Excuse me while I puke (Updated)
Topics: Political News and commentariesWe knew it was coming, sooner or later. Someone was bound to use Kennedy's death to push the health care bill.
But using someone's death as an excuse to push an unpopular political agenda makes me sick to my stomach, especially when it's Ted Kennedy, undoubtedly a great man who accomplished much in his life but a man with a much checkered past who after the Chappaquiddick episode gained a reputation as a heavy drinker and a womanizer, and who's agenda I greatly disagreed with, albeit I respected him as a fellow human being and recognize that he did pull himself together later in life to become a man much loved and respected and who was likely the most influential liberal voice of his time.
Yet, who would've figured the cries to push the health care bill in his name would be so soon, as Legal Insurrection writes.
How to react to Ted Kennedy's death? There certainly is an initial inclination to react the way so many left-wing blogs reacted to the death of Robert Novak, such as this post at the prominent Crooks and Liars:As Legal Insurrection notes (additional commentary, links, and an update here), this theme of naming a bill after Kennedy is sure to pick up steam, as Democrats are desperate to do anything to overcome public opposition on the merits.Novak will perhaps be best remembered -- if at all -- as one of the most compulsive professional liars to have wormed his way inside the Beltway, and that's saying something. No, will not go there. But I will take to task the people who are seeking to use Kennedy's death to their political advantage, such as this call by Balloon-Juice:
" it's time to come back after Labor Day with a single coherent Senator Edward M. Kennedy Health Care Reform Bill, and to twist whatever arms, ears, or other parts are necessary to get a good strong comprehensive bill passed and signed, NOW. We owe the memory of a great man no less."
Nausea-inducing update: WSJ: Kennedy's Death Spurs Calls to Pass Health Legislation (Pelosi, SEIU, etc.)
Sicko Update: Biggest sicko comment of the day is from CBS historian Douglas Brinkley who essentially says that Ted Kennedy is a "martyr" for Obamacare.
