Obamacare WILL result in rationing (Updated)

Topics: Political News and commentaries

As we've noted in our posts over and over, there are two certain results from a nationalized healthcare plan: ever-increasing taxes and rationed care. Today, Warner Todd Huston addresses the latter, and perhaps the most alarming, in his piece titled Rationing WILL Come:

It is beyond question that healthcare in America is troubled. Costs have soared, employers are having a difficult time keeping up with the rising costs, and many Americans do not easily get the care they'd like. There are solutions, of course, but the headlong rush to implement a government controlled, top down, cold, autocratic system is the wrong avenue to take.

One of the scariest aspects of a government controlled system is when government gets between you and your doctor and imposes rationing on you both. Rationing is when government decides what medical procedures or medicines you are allowed to have, when the government takes the decisions away from you and your doctor. Worse, rationing is guaranteed if Obamcare is forced upon us all.

Read it all.

As the Washington Times pointed out in a May 1, 2009 editorial, Obama's healthcare rationing will mean that bureaucrats will decide when to pull the plug:

President Obama admitted he wants the government to decide what health care Americans receive. "There's always going to be an asymmetry of information between patient and provider," he said. "And part of what I think government can do effectively is to be an honest broker in assessing and evaluating treatment options."

Thanks, but no thanks, Mr. President. Our health is not a commodity to be brokered. Even if not all doctors boast perfect bedside manners, Americans still trust their judgment, their medical training and their ability to interact directly with individual patients in clinical settings far more than they trust government statisticians matching approved treatments to reported illnesses based on lifeless charts.

In an interview published by the New York Times on Tuesday, Mr. Obama continued by saying the need for honest brokers "certainly [is] true when it comes to Medicare and Medicaid, where the taxpayers are footing the bill and we have an obligation to get those costs under control." Some would say that is exactly the problem with government-run health care: Considerations of cost come before care, and sometimes rules before reason.

The very last thing any of us need is for government bureaucrats to be making our healthcare decisions for us and our doctor. We cannot allow ourselves to be deluded, Obamacare does indeed mean government rationing of the healthcare of ourselves and our loved ones, and yes, even making the decision of when to give up on us because of cost - and simply pull the plug.
