Lets see the transparency

Topics: Political News and commentaries

Ed Whelan points to an article in today's Washington Post reporting that President Obama's interview of Sonia Sotomayor left President Obama "sure she agrees with the constitutional underpinnings of Roe v. Wade":

"In their discussions, they talked about the theory of constitutional interpretation, generally, including her views on unenumerated rights in the Constitution and the theory of settled law," Gibbs said. "He left very comfortable with her interpretation of the Constitution being similar to that of his."
Upon which Whelan ponders:
Just wondering: Was the interview taped? And if so, would President Obama, consistent with his commitment to -- or, rather, rhetoric about -- transparency, make the tape publicly available so that the American people can know just what commitments and assurances he extracted or received?
Why is it that I somehow know that Ed already knows the answers to his questions, as do the rest of us. We can expect Obama to be about as transparent on these issues as he's been so far on most others - very little to none at all.

As a first step in the right direction, Obama should start with releasing those Sotomayor memos and any other documents used in the decision-making process.

And yes, I'd like to hear those tapes Whelan refers to; I'm sure we'd all be amazed at "what commitments and assurances he extracted or received," and what he didn't.
