An excellent question
Topics: Political News and commentariesAS Dan Riehl notes, Obama is said to have been observing the Somali pirate hostage situation closely and any Rules of Engagement issues rest fully on him. So, if Captain Phillips managed to escape from the Somali pirates to any significant distance and our Navy did nothing: Where Was The Navy?
In the president's defense, could it be that our president has been too occupied with other more important (to him) matters? After all, as Monica Crowley notes, when asked what, if anything, his administration was doing to resolve the crisis and secure the safe release of an American countryman, the President of the United States refused to comment, saying, "We're talking about housing here":
So: the guy who is overreaching on every DOMESTIC issue----spending trillions of dollars of our money, expanding government in unprecedented ways, nationalizing the financial sector, the auto industry, the health care industry, the energy industry, and federalizing education---can't bring himself to make a statement about an American held hostage by terrorists. Our take home message here is that we have a captain of a U.S. merchant vessel being held hostage by Islamic terrorists, who tried to swim for safety while our navy apparently had no Rules of Engagement to protect and cover his escape, apparently because our president and his administration is too inexperienced, too passive, and too uninvolved, to think ahead and establish Rules of Engagement that included reacting to a logical event.Neither could his Vice President, who referred all questions about the crisis to the National Security Adviser.
And neither could his Secretary of State, who laughed her way through an answer about confronting those pirates.
