Mark Steyn's 'Keep staggering on' and another similar story

The story makes me think of our fast-emerging system of welfare capitalism and the Dems intention, especially not that they have Obama coming in as president (sic), to apply the same policies that got us in this financial mess - to keep us in this financial mess.
On the other hand, unlike the case in Steyn's piece about cops handing out flip-flops to drunken women to protect them - at public expense - from twisting their ankles, our government could simply not make the banks shell out the dough in the first place - at what is essentially, as we now know, public expense - to put financial morons and other such unqualified persons that have no chance of ever paying their mortgages into homes that they will never, ever, ever, not in ten thousand years, pay for.
