Harry Reid Tries To Sneak in Oil Shale Ban
Topics: Political News and commentariesOnly one day after the democrats capitulate on the offshore drilling ban, Sneaky Harry, also known as Senator Harry Reid, tries to sneak an Oil Shale ban into a continuing resolution (CR). House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) was quick to call his little trick an insult to the American people (HT - Minority Report):
WASHINGTON D.C. -- House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement today after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) moved to offer an amendment to the continuing resolution (CR) legislation to reinstate the ban on oil shale energy production:Here is the text of Reid's proposed new ban on oil shale, that he is trying to add as an amendment to the CR or move seperately as a "stimulus" package, or we should say an anti-stimulus package if this is included."Sen. Reid's move to reinstate the ban on oil shale energy production is an insult to the American people and yet another example of Democrats acting to make energy more expensive for working families and small businesses. At a time when our economy is struggling, it's outrageous that Sen. Reid would attempt to block efforts to open up responsible oil shale development, which would create good-paying jobs and help lower energy costs.
"The American people want the boldest, most aggressive energy reform plan possible to bring down gas prices and create more jobs. That's why Republicans have been fighting for a vote on our 'all of the above' plan to lower gasoline prices by increasing production of American energy, promoting more conservation and efficiency, and encouraging the use of more alternative and renewable fuels. We will not retreat in our fight to enact the comprehensive energy plan that the American people support and deserve, and we will not stand idly by while Sen. Reid moves to destroy American jobs and increase energy costs for millions of Americans."
NOTE: The text of the House-passed CR repeals the moratorium against funding the final regulations for oil shale development. An amendment, set to be offered by Sen. Reid, would reverse that repeal, effectively leaving the moratorium in place through September 30, 2009:
"SEC. 1602. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, including section 152 of division A of H.R. 2638 (110th Congress), the Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance, and Continuing Appropriations Act, 2009, the terms and conditions contained in section 433 of division F of Public Law 110-161 shall remain in effect for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2009."
Redstate suggests you get on the phone right now, to which I add that you should keep trying until you get through :
Harry Reid (D-NV) thinking the public and Senate are both distracted by the Paulson plan to bailout Wall Street intends to continue the ban on oil shale drilling.I've tried several times already and keep getting "all circuits are busy now." Apparently the Senators are getting an ear full.He is doing it right now.
Call your Senator right now at (202)224-3121 and tell him to tell Harry Reid not to put the drilling ban back in the continuing resolution.
Section 1602 of the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act of 2008 needs to get tossed.
