Even after all the smears, why do we still love Sarah Palin?
Topics: Political News and commentariesMark Noonan over at Blogs for Victory points to a Victor Davis Hanson piece and says Hanson answers it perfectly:
I have been asked by many why I have such confidence in a rookie Alaskan governor, given the rigors of the campaign to follow. (Many Republican pundits apparently do not.) I think we are starting to see the answers to that question. The proverbial "they" hacked into her private email accounts. They swore that her daughter was the real mother of her Down Syndrome baby. They sent legions of reporters and lawyers to Alaska to dig up dirt. They wrote columns suggesting that she was stupid, uneducated, dishonest, a liar, and worse still. All this was the work of moralists, who, in their more extreme manifestations, tried to flood a Chicago radio station to disrupt guests, who doctored photos of McCain to subvert his portrait, who disgraced the Atlantic brand by trafficking in pregnancy rumors, and who now publish the private email of Palin.Good points, all. However, the one that, in my opinion, actually does answer the question of why we still love Sarah Palin after all the smears and innuendos, is Mark Noonen, who writes simply:And? She is still smiling and apparently unmoved. Had they done this to Biden, he would have gone berserk. Wait--they didn't do this to Biden, and he seems near berserk in his daily gaffes.
"... she's one of us. She's of that part of America - the overwhelming majority - which believes in God, believes in fellow Americans, loves this nation, would rather a child become a soldier than some bizarre, pierced and tattoo'd weirdo participating in anti-globalization demonstrations, is generous to a fault and is keenly aware of personal failings while conscious of the promise of ultimate redemption."Unlike the feminists of the angry left, Sarah Palin is a real woman, with all the qualities, attributes, problems, imperfections, determination, and respect for life and human kind that is so representative of the vast majority of women in America. She is also a natural leader, and totally confident in her womanhood - so much so - that besides being a deadly shot and knowing how to kill and field dress a moose, she's a mother, a wife, a governor, and now a candidate for vice president of the United States of America, the greatest nation on earth.
And while these facts are all true, she's also the subject of legends in Alaska, albeit they may not have yet been fully documented. For example, I've even heard said by some that she once bagged a caribou by staring it down until it died, turned down a job as skipper of a Deadliest Catch boat because it wasn't challenging enough, and fishes salmon by convincing them it's in their interest to jump into the boat. And believe it or not, some say Sarah Palin paid her way through school by hunting for yeti pelts with a slingshot.
