Why Is Pelosi Still Allowed To Receive Communion ?

Topics: Political News and commentaries

In Washington archbishop rips Pelosi on abortion by Bob Cusack, Nancy Pelosi is quoted as saying that the decision as to whether or not a politician that supports abortion can receive communion is "a regional thing" and that "she has not encountered such difficulties in her church."

The Speaker recently said she, unlike other Catholic politicians who support abortion rights, has not clashed with her church about receiving communion.

In an interview on C-SPAN that aired earlier this month, Pelosi was asked about how some church officials have raised objections about whether former presidential contenders -- such as Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) -- should receive communion.

Pelosi, a Roman Catholic whose district includes most of San Francisco, said she has not encountered such difficulties in her church.

"I think some of it is regional," she said, "It depends on the bishop of a certain region, and, fortunately for me, communion has not been withheld and I'm a regular communicant, so that would be a severe blow to me if that were the case."

Contrary to what Pelosi says, receiving communion and being a politician supporting abortion is not a "regional thing," and as a practicing Catholic (emphasis on the word "practicing" - as in not perfect by any means) , as in not a "cafeteria Catholic" like Pelosi, I would like to know why Nancy Pelosi is still allowed to receive communion - after Pope Benedict has warned Catholic politicians they risked excommunication from the Church and should not receive communion if they support abortion. Is she saying that her Bishop and her priest have made their own decision to act against Church law? If so, what do they have to say? And how can one be a "practicing" Catholic, as Pelosi claims to be, and not follow the laws of the Church? Is her Bishop a "cafeteria Bishop"? Is her Priest a "cafeteria Priest"? We know what the Arch Bishop of Denver has to say about this.

As Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, archbishop of the Catholic archdiocese of Denver, at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception at 6:30 Mass on Sunday night, said as the Democratic Convention was set to begin: "If you're Catholic and you disagree with your Church: What do you do? You change your mind."
