Who's Behind Our High Gas Prices?
Topics: Political News and commentariesThis doesn't require a lot of long-winded analysis.
91% of House Republicans have historically voted to increase the production of American-made oil and gas. 86% of House Democrats have historically voted against increasing the production of American-made oil and gas.
As John points out at Powerline, the Democratic Party has pursued policies designed to drive up the cost of petroleum over a period of several decades, and that's why we're seeing the price of gas at the pump. Remarkably, the Democrats don't seem to have taken much of a political hit from the current spike in gas prices. And incredibly, Speaker Pelosi & House Democrats Want to Make Gasoline More Expensive.
Jed Babbin writes:
Former Speaker Newt Gingrich's petition to Congress demanding the removal of government obstacles to increasing our energy supplies is gathering momentum by the minute, while the Democrats' do-nothing Congress wants to raise fuel prices. The solution: Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less.Actually, labeling Congress a bunch of "do-nothings" is almost right, but not quite. They're doing their best to create more obstacles to growing our energy supply. And while the price of energy is already unreasonably high, they're working hard on a liberal agenda that will raise the prices consumers pay for gasoline, diesel fuel, natural gas and home heating oil.
With the summer upon us (and the November election fast approaching) the price of gasoline should be on the mind of every member who wants to keep his job after November. There is a conservative approach to the problem: relieve government burdens on the energy market. But Congress isn't controlled by conservatives: the Democrats rule both houses of Congress and - even with gasoline prices reaching all-time highs almost daily -- the Dems are doing their best to raise the burden on the voters.
Update on 'Drill Here. Drill Now. Pay Less. They're now at more than 350,000 signatures...

Despite these articulations about oil production, speculation drives up the price of oil. I found it amusing that one of the articles blames under-reporting of oil production as one of the causes of high oil prices. Under-reporting would cause concern, but I trust the excuse is a cover for rampant speculation. Speculators (futures traders) know how much oil is being delivered!
Second, we must focus in on the fact that we only have so many oil refineries. Just because you dig up more oil (extract) does not translate into more gasoline available at the pump. The crude oil needs to be refined into gasoline. If we desire to blame the liberal-environmentally-conscious Democrats for anything, it is their tenacity to hamper the creation of oil refineries!

Ergo, drill here, drill now, AND build more refineries. And still blame the Dems, as well as the oil companies for not trying harder to build more refineries and drill for more oil!

Dear Mike:
Although the solution to building more refineries seems obvious, it does have one distracting feature: the odor of rotten eggs. Everybody wants to build more refineries, but the thought of smelling rotten eggs forever discourages the locals in the intended area for refinery construction to permit such an endeavor.
For whatever reason, oil people have been unable to solve the stench rotten eggs in their effluent. Therein resides a four-decade problem in an egg shell, so to speak!
