Fox: Senator Ted Kennedy Has Malignant Glioma

Topics: Political News and commentaries

Fox News is reporting that Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has a malignant brain tumor. Doctors for the senator say tests conducted after he suffered a seizure this weekend show a tumor in his left parietal lobe. Preliminary results from a biopsy of the brain identified the cause of the seizure as a malignant glioma.

Not wanting to rain on anyone's parade, particularly the talking heads and medical experts on Fox, malignant gliomas are especially aggressive forms of cancer and often result in death within one to two years following diagnosis. There is no cure for gliomas and most available treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation (adjuvant chemotherapy has not been shown to helpful for advanced aggressive forms) provide only minor symptomatic relief. Actual survival odds depend upon or type, size and location, and the patient's age and overall health, but even in the best of conditions, the prognosis is not favorable.

While there is almost nothing politically that I could agree with Senator Kennedy on, nonetheless, my prayers are with him and his family. Learning that you or your loved one has cancer is like having a ton of bricks fall on your chest, and I empathize with what they are going through at this very moment. Having survived so-called terminal cancer myself - twice, I know how devastating it is to not only be told you have a deadly disease, but knowing that the only way you're going to get through it is endure a great deal of pain and discomfort. Senator Kennedy is a fighter, and right now, that's the best thing he's got going for him. That, and a loving family.
