'Hope' Is Not A Foreign Policy

Obamaman's message of hope and change rings hollow as hell to those of us who live on the reality side of life. As Steve Huntley notes today at the Chicago Sun-Times, recalling the political salvos over Iraq between Barack Obama and John McCain the other day, Obama's "hope and change" message may make for good political theater, but a foreign policy - it's not.

But more importantly, the exchange offered a revealing contrast between the politics of realism and the politics of hope: 'Hope' is politics, not real Iran, Iraq policy.

Instead of offering hope, Barack Obama offers the same fear- and envy-based tactics on which populism has always thrived. While Democrats have often used these tactics in primaries, the Economist worries that Obama might try to govern based on these promises."

"Hope and fear" - FOR a man who has placed "hope" at the centre of his campaign, Barack Obama can sound pretty darned depressing.
