The 'Huckster' Says He Has A Theology Degree? Well, .....

Topics: Political News and commentaries

So, the slick Huckster has been saying that he has a theology degree:

About a month ago, Republican presidential candidates were trying to position themselves as the best suited to combat global terrorism. Giuliani pointed to 9/11, McCain pointed to his military service several decades ago, and Mike Huckabee pointed to his ministerial training.

"I think I'm stronger than most people because I truly understand the nature of the war that we are in with Islamo fascism," Huckabee told the Christian Broadcasting Network. "These are people that want to kill us. It's a theocratic war. And I don't know if anybody fully understands that. I'm the only guy on that stage with a theology degree. I think I understand it really well."

As The Carpetbagger Report wrote yesterday": "... on its face, it's a pretty unpersuasive pitch - how much could Huckabee have learned at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in the 1970s about 21st-century fundamentalist Islam? Probably not much."

But that's another story entirely, because it turns out that the Huckster got a B.A. degree from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia (Ouch! Cough, cough, cough, giggle, giggle - not exactly a bastion of the intellectual elite). Then, he spent a year - one year - at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Tex., "before dropping out to work for the televangelist James Robison, who bought him his first decent wardrobe and showed him how to use television." Even Huckabee's campaign admits he doesn't have the claimed religious credential.

So, for those who may be slow to get it, the Huckster has no theological degree, just a B.A. from some Podunct U (and hell no I won't apologize for dissing a third rate college).

As a graduate of Ouachita Baptisst University which you describe with the following descriptions:

"But that's another story entirely, because it turns out that the Huckster got a B.A. degree from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia (Ouch! Cough, cough, cough, giggle, giggle - not exactly a bastion of the intellectual elite)."

"So, for those who may be slow to get it, the Huckster has no theological degree, just a B.A. from some Podunct U (and hell no I won't apologize for dissing a third rate college)."

.... can I ask if you've ever visited our campus? If not, I guess we can assume you are just making erroneous assumptions based on no evidence - something that some would call "lying."

I was waiting with bated breath for a graduate of Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia to react to my "Ouch! Cough, cough, cough, giggle, giggle" comment. I knew that one or more were surely forthcoming.

As for whether or not I have ever visited the campus of Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, I have to say that I haven't had the pleasure, though I'm sure it's a beautiful campus. But I'm not quite sure what visiting the campus has to do with academics, especially in such matters of ease of admission (as in minimum SAT scores and GPA), class size (smaller is surely better but larger more often than not offers more competition), and "degree" of difficulty regarding the academics.

However, I'm willing to accept Dr. Kluck's word that all of the above is fine and dandy at OBU, and that the Huckster, if I may call him that at the risk of offending the good doctor, received a fine degree from a fine university that was as difficult to be admitted to as a state university and as difficult as a state university is to complete one's studies at, and graduate from.

This having been said, I'll just assume that Huckabee neglected to take much in comparative religion or international affairs, given his naiveté in both. As for myself, having graduated from large state universities with degrees in science and mathematics, I can honestly say that even though I can recall taking difficult classes such as organic chemistry (for example) with over a hundred students in it, I still managed to take a large number of electives that provided me the basis for knowing a hell of a lot more about different religions and foreign affairs than our friend the governor. Yet, the mere thought of me running for president, little that I know, scares the living hell out of me. And the Huckster wants us to consider him for president?

The evangelicals may be willing to buy a pig in a poke, but "prayerfully," if I can be so bold, most Americans won't.

Thanks to Wesley Kluck for his comments though, and I hope to some day have the opportunity to visit the beautiful campus of OBU. I'm sure its academics are fine, and that it offers opportunity for those who either choose not to go to a large state university either by choice or necessity.
