Seattlepi.com: Bush robs cancer sufferers of hope

Topics: Political News and commentaries

Up until now I've heard leftwing nutcases accuse President Bush of just about everything I thought possible. But this opinion piece at seattlepi.com that essentially blames Bush for the suffering of cancer patients (depicted in the title of the piece) wins the prize for bonehead lefty loon piece of the year: Bush robs cancer sufferers of hope:

The number of cancer deaths in the U.S. has declined for the second straight year, and researchers are making huge strides, including a vaccine that was created to prevent cervical cancer. Despite this success, funding for the National Cancer Institute -- the foundation of the nation's cancer research efforts -- is in danger because President Bush has threatened to veto it.

This veto is like a knife in the back to all of those people who are racing for the cure, sending friends and family to cancer screenings or "buying pink" to support researchers working through the night. It is a blow to every community holding bake sales to pay for someone's bone marrow transplant, every church group that has a change jar to raise funds for a friend in need.

We are working every day for a cure because we have hope, because we believe we can make something positive out of something terrible. I do not understand how Bush can take our hope away, or veto the hopes of millions of people affected by this disease.

The president threatened to veto all appropriations bills that include more funding for critical programs than his own paltry budget requested, including Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (Labor-HHS) appropriations bill. The cancer research programs funded by the federal government are included in the funding for the National Institutes of Health, one piece of the Labor-HHS legislation. Congress will have the opportunity to override this veto, and I hope enough constituents like me will call on all of our representatives, particularly those in the president's party who may be tempted to follow his shameful lead, to ensure funding for this critical cancer research.

By the way, like the loony author of the piece, I too am a cancer survivor - but times two (stage IV each time). However, I have the common sense to separate personal politics from the political realities of funding for cancer research. Having spent much of my life doing cancer research, I can assure the lefty loon that the politics within the scientific community far outweighs anything the president has to say about the funding of particular programs. The research will go on, but the waste will be reduced.
