Breaking: Musharraf Orders Military To Destroy Jihadists
Topics: War on TerrorIf the report is accurate, Musharraf has apparently ordered a go-ahead for a massive military action in the restive tribal areas to crush pro-Taliban and Al Qaeda militants once for all.
Was this his reason for ordering marshal law? According to my Pashtun connections, there's much more to it than is indicated by this report. Musharraf's ISI and much of the military is too close to the Taliban to believe that this has anything to do with his declaring marshal law. More likely, he's showing the West what it wants to see, and behind the scenes negotiating with the extremists to hold on to power. Remember what happened the day of Bhutto's return to Pakistan!
So, who's Musharraf negotiating with? Which leader(s)? Check out this possibility ... Is this, as the author suggests, key to understanding the Musharraf emergency declaration ?

the other 'reads" of this news might be more accurate.
many if not most are highly skeptical of Musharraf.
but he has indisputably been a better ally in the gwot then france before sarko, or then turkey.
like Saudi Arabia, Pakistan is perhaps only a 50% ally; in SA the royal family might be 50^ pro-Bin Laden; DITTO Paksitan's ISI.
All the mnore reason we need to cultivate the 50% we do have.
Bhutto was warned not to come back.
her retrun destabilized things more, as did the Pakistan's Suporeme Court.
The Bhutto Deal was predicated on Musharraf's ability to remain President - which their Supreme Court sought to negate.
This Suprteme Court has done more harm to Musharraf's attempts at reconciliation than anyone else.
BOTTOM-LINE: If Musharraf mounts the campaign described in the account I linked to then the naysayers should ST*U.
This should be obvious in the coming days or weeks.
Musharraf must put up or shut up.
I tust he will put up - and win.
Petraeus showed it can be done.
