Tragedy In The Twin Cities (Bumped with Videos)
Topics: National NewsCaptain Ed is all over the story of the collapse of one of the most-traveled freeways in the Twin Cities -- a span over the Mississippi River, and notes that at the time, the highway had bumper-to-bumper traffic in the middle of rush hour, and dozens of cars have gone into the river or been caught in the rubble: Click to "Pray For The Twin Cities," with updates.
As Powerline points out, 40 year old bridges like these don't collapse in the US, so it's very important to find out as soon as possible what brought the multiple spans down. So far, no one has a clue.
Here's a Channel 5 Minneapolis video on the collapse:
Here's CNN's video showing the actual collapse via a security camera. (hat tip - Captain's Quarters)

Update: Was The Bridge Deficient? - "In 2005, inspectors from the Minnesota Department of Transportation deemed the bridge "structurally deficient," in data submitted to the Federal Highway Administration's National Bridge Inventory. ... Inspectors gave the bridge a sufficiency rating of 50 percent on a scale of 0 to 100 percent. A rating of 50 percent or lower means the bridge might need to be replaced."
