It's 'Over' For Obama? (Updated)

Topics: War on Terror

superman2.jpgDan Riehl suggests we can stick a fork in Obama, that his media-inspired run for'08' is over. And Dan offers that it's not simply because of Obama's macho speech suggesting that he'd invade Pakistan will destroy his uber-Peacenik creed.

If you think Iraq and Afghanistan are tough, read up on Pakistan's Tribal Areas. Then add to that the instability of Musharraf's regime. Obama just left himself wide open for attack from the Left, the Right and world leaders and diplomats who never think it's a good idea when a would be American President makes noise about invading another land. Musharraf himself is liable to come out with a, "this is not helpful" statement. And he'd be correct.

This is what happens when the media falls in love with a rank amateur, elevating him to a position in American politics well before his time.

This is what happens when the media falls in love with a rank amateur, elevating him to a position in American politics well before his time. The Clinton Machine didn't even fully box him into making this unforced error. They were only jabbing at him. If they ever start really whoopin' on this guy, it could become too ugly to watch.

More on Obama the "unilateralist" - here ...

As for Obama trying to be tough on terrorism, I can't help but wonder if he realizes that Bush has previously promised to send troops into Pakistan if they've got a bead on Bin Laden, and if he actually believes that "invading" Pakistan instead of a surgical strike of a few hundred troops, as Bush has suggested, is appropriate. My Pashtun friends that come from the tribal areas of Pakistan would be the first to tell Obama that Bush's approach is far more likely to be effective, while at the same time falling short of destroying Musharraf's chances for remaining in office a while longer or avoiding being assassinated.

Regarding Dan's point that it's over for Obama in 08, given the far left's hatred of our military and its apparent desire to have the West lose the war on terror, he's probably right. However, the idea of Obama being "over" brings to mind the question as to whether Obama actually ever had a chance in the first place, since sooner or later his apparent lack of knowledge on basic geography would surely sooner or later become evident. As Captain Ed points out:

... Not to demean Obama's vast military expertise, either, but has he looked at a map of Pakistan? It's shaped like a wedge, with the base on the Arabian Sea and the Waziristan region almost the farthest point from the water. How does Obama propose to create lines of communication for an invasion? Right now we rely on Pakistan for overflight to Afghanistan to supply our troops for the fight against the Taliban there. General Obama would eliminate those lines of communication overnight, leaving the invasion force critically isolated -- unless he thinks we can start resupplying Afghanistan through Iran.

Only an idiot would invade Pakistan from the north, if at all. Any war against Pakistan would have to seize the Arabian Sea ports first, and then roll through the center of Pakistan -- where all of the formerly moderate Pakistanis would have lived -- to get to a mountainous region that Pakistan itself has hesitated to engage.

And did we mention that Pakistan has a potential mobilization of 39 million troops?

Apparently, Obama must indeed be such an idiot as to contemplate invading Pakistan from the North. Surely, he wouldn't think that Iran would give permission for overflight; not even General Obama could think that, or could he?
