How Is It That Pissing On Christ Is Okay, But Dunking Koran In Toilet Is A Hate Crime ?

Isn't this a case of political correctness run amuck and police allowing Muslims to invoke sharia law in the U.S.?
Interestingly, Andres Serrano was never threatened with prosecution for depicting a small plastic crucifix supporting the body of Jesus Christ submerged in a glass of the artist's urine (image on left), as indeed, he shouldn't have been, even though it was extremely offensive to Christians. It was, albeit terribly distasteful, in the expression of free speech.
However, now a Pace University man is jailed for tossing a Koran in a toilet because Muslim students, and CAIR, have protested against his actions. In the eyes of the law does free speech only apply to attacking the Christian faith, but not Islam?
Yesterday, Robert Spencer pointed to LGF's post on the "Beyond outrageous" incident in which
Stanislav Shmulevich, at Pace University, has been arrested and will face "hate crime" charges for throwing a Koran into a toilet, after the university caved in to demands from Muslim students:
A 23-year-old man was arrested Friday on hate-crime charges after he threw a Quran in a toilet at Pace University on two separate occasions, police said.Just as we'd expect, CAIR is involved.Stanislav Shmulevich of Brooklyn was arrested on charges of criminal mischief and aggravated harassment, both hate crimes, police said. It was unclear if he was a student at the school. A message left at the Shmulevich home was not immediately returned.
The Islamic holy book was found in a toilet at Pace's lower Manhattan campus by a teacher on Oct. 13. A student discovered another book in a toilet on Nov. 21, police said.
Muslim activists had called on Pace University to crack down on hate crimes after the incidents. As a result, the university said it would offer sensitivity training to its students.
The school was accused by Muslim students of not taking the incident seriously enough at first. Pace classified the first desecration of the holy book as an act of vandalism, but university officials later reversed themselves and referred the incident to the New York Police Department's hate crimes unit.
The incidents came amid a spate of vandalism cases with religious or racial overtones at the school. In an earlier incident on Sept. 21, the school reported another copy of the Quran was found in a library toilet, and in October someone scrawled racial slurs on a student's car at the Westchester County satellite campus and on a bathroom wall at the campus in lower Manhattan. Police did not connect Shmulevich to those incidents.
Treatment of the Quran is a sensitive issue for Muslims, who view the book as a sacred object and mistreating it as an offense against God. The religion teaches that the Quran is the direct word of God.
And as LGF points out, whatever happened to free speech?
First, Shmulevich was arrested and jailed for 24 hours. Second, he's not facing misdemeanor charges--he's being charged with two felonies, criminal mischief and aggravated harassment.Sound ridiculous? Third, his income is on a borderline that disqualifies him for a public defender, so he stands to suffer incredible financial hardship as well.
Fourth, his name and photograph were published in several newspapers in New York, and he and his mother were ambushed outside the court by reporters. In a case like this, clearly with the potential to enrage radical Muslims, this is so irresponsible of the media that it borders on criminal.
Do we still live in a country that values free speech? This case is pretty good evidence that we do not. Mr. Shmulevich is caught in a Kafkaesque nightmare right out of the Soviet Union, and it's all happening at the demand of the Muslim Student Association and the Council on American Islamic Relations.

Mr. Shmulevich's actions are indeed highly reprehensible...imagine, soiling such clean toilets as the one in the above picture with such Koranic filth!

It's disgusting that he was thrown in jail, our society has fallen far. America used to be based on FREEDOM. It is the job of it's people to insure that it remains a free country, all that is necessary for the triumph of evil men is for good men to do nothing.
