U.S. Arming Sunnis In Iraq To Battle Al-Qaeda
Topics: IraqSounds like a good idea for now; and as Robert Spencer puts it, you're either with our jihadists or with their jihadists.
However, I can't help but wonder what happens with the weapons when the Sunnis that we've armed, who have up to now been fighting us, are through fighting al-Qaeda?
And by the way, I thought that the Iraqi government's aim is to disarm and demobilize the militias in Iraq. Aren't we creating a new one by arming the Sunnis? In other words, does this tactic "stay bought"? Would it not be more reasonable to get their cooperation in letting the U.S. and Iraqi government deal with al-Qaeda?
In answering my own question, the Sunnis' lack of trust in the Iraqi government may leave the U.S. with no other option than to arm give this approach the old college try!
