Iraq revives Saddam deal with China - U.S. Unaware Of Deal (Updated)
Topics: IraqWell, this is an interesting development.
I say to hell with it all; let the damned Chinese keep the Sunni's, Shi'ia, al-Qaeda, and Iranian agents from murdering each other, and just bring our guys home. Screw the Iraqis.
After all, the Chinese and the Russians are busy doing business with Iran who is dead set on destroying the West. Meanwhile, Iraq, who we are helping to stabilize and who has asked us to stay long enough to do so, awards the Chinese with fat oil contracts from the Saddam era.
Update: Since this post was written at 2 AM, it was a bit off the cuff. During the night I did a bit of re-think, and my anger mellowed somewhat with the thought that the idea of having the Chinese with an interest in the outcome in Iraq just might not be such a bad idea after all. Then, early this morning I received the following email from Harry Owens with his customary good input, offering that this resource is not considered very large and may serve as an enticement to get the Chinese involved in Iraq's internal security problems:
As for the comment in the article that the USA had no knowledge of the transaction, clearly this is merely "smoke & mirrors." The State Department knows all these things ... and may have encouraged them. The fanatical Muslim unrest is as much a problem for capitalistic-leaning China as it is for the USA. One could view this oil deal as a contingency plan for the fickle agenda of the US Democratic Party. Note, from the article:Iraq has been reluctant to revive Saddam-era contracts, but seems to have turned to China as security problems and uncertainties over Iraqi investment law have deterred other investors. The field had an estimated pre-war capacity of 90,000 barrels a day and the 1997 contract was valued at about $1.2bn (€900m, £600m). "The contract with the previous administration is still valid - it was signed and we will honour it," Mr al-Shahristani said. "We have been talking since I visited China eight months ago and the Chinese have just submitted a revised proposal to meet the new technical requirements for oil field development laid out by the Iraqi government."
