Gaza Christians Fear For Lives

Topics: Middle East News and Perspectives

Christians in Gaza are quickly learning what life, and threats to end it, are like under radical Islamic rule in Hamastan, and they have appealed to the international community to protect them against increased attacks like the ones they've experienced over the last few days.

The appeal came following a series of attacks on a Christian school and church in Gaza City over the past few days.

Father Manuel Musalam, leader of the small Latin community in the Gaza Strip, said masked gunmen torched and looted the Rosary Sisters School and the Latin Church.

"The masked gunmen used rocket-propelled grenades to storm the main entrances of the school and church," he said. "Then they destroyed almost everything inside, including the Cross, the Holy Book, computers and other equipment."

Musalam expressed outrage over the burning of copies of the Bible, noting that the gunmen destroyed all the Crosses inside the church and school. "Those who did these awful things have no respect for Christian-Muslim relations," he said.

An AP report has it that the damage took place on Thursday, but wasn't reported until days later because of the chaos that has prevailed since Islamic Hamas took over in Gaza. Gunman actually used the roof of the school during the fighting, and the convent was "desecrated." As a priest at the church aptly noted, "Nothing happens by mistake these days." Hamas officials may offer all the surprise and comdemnation they can muster, but you can safely bet your bottom dollar that the attack against the church, the school, and against Christians are not accidental.

So what possible purpose could Hamas have for terrorizing Christians and wanting Israel to open the gates and let them flee Gaza? Does a trojan horse offer any clues (other than, of course, that Christians aren't jihadists)?
