Body Of Missing US Soldier Found In Euphrates River (Unconfirmed and uncollaborated update: Iraqi police say two more found)
Topics: IraqPolice in Iraq say the half-naked body of one of three missing US soldiers has been found in the Euphrates River in the town of Mussayab, south of Baghdad, and the U.S. military is investigating:
Thousands of US and Iraqi troops having been scouring farmlands through an area south of Baghdad known as the "triangle of death", since an ambush on May 12 in which four soldiers and an Iraqi interpreter were killed.More coming ...
No word on the other missing soldiers, and no further word so far regarding the unconfirmed and uncollaborated report on Arab websites reporting 2 soldiers found beheaded back on the 18th of this month.
Uncollaborated Update via IraqSlogger:
Multiple media outlets have confirmed through US military and Iraqi police sources that one body found Wednesday in the Euphrates river, reportedly with Western features and wearing US-issue military pants, has been turned over to US authorities.I'm not giving this latter report much credence yet, as this same news source reported what Arab media had reported previously - that two soldiers bodies had been found the earlier. However, although we had all hoped for the best, few if any of us actually expected any other outcome. The independent Iraqi news agency VOI is reporting that Iraqi police forces in Babel province have found two more bodies near al-Furat river in al-Musayab region, 50 km northwest of Hilla.
"Two bodies in U.S. uniform were found by Babel police forces near al-Furat river. They bore signs of torture," a police source, who asked not to be named, told VOI.
"The police handed the bodies to the U.S. army and cordoned off the area," he also said. No comment was available from the U.S. army on the incident.
