New Drugs Bring Breakthrough In Treatment Of Type 2 Diabetes
Topics: MedicineConventional treatment for Type 2 diabetes uses oral drugs to control sugar levels initially and when patients stop responding to drugs, insulin shots are the only treatment. But the discovery of three new compounds has led doctors to believe that the management of type 2 diabetes could change dramatically:
[...] The new generation drugs are significant since they not only address insulin resistance in type 2 diabetics, but target multiple problems such as excessive weight and even promote the regeneration of beta cells in the pancreas.More here ...Two of the three compounds in the pipeline target the production of GLP-1 - a hormone secreted by the gut in the body. GLP-1 stimulates insulin secretion once food reaches the duodenum.
Byetta-Exenacide (sic - Byetta-Exenatide) boosts the production of GLP-1 and is given as an injection. It was found in the saliva of the gila monster.
Januvia, the other, is an oral pill. It blocks DPP 4 - a compound that prevents GLP-1 from being secreted - again boosting GLP-1 in the body.
The third compound, Rimonabant, blocks the endo-cannabinoid system in the brain - decreases appetite, attacks fat tissues and controls the urge to smoke.
"These drugs are unique since they address multiple deficiencies. They not only increase levels of insulin but also decrease weight and appetite.
