New Birth Control Pill Would Eliminate Menstruation
Topics: MedicineLybrel (90 microgram levonorgestrel/20 microgram ethinyl estradiol tablets), a new birth control pill that completely eliminates monthly mensuration is expected to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration next month. Other birth control pills mimic the body's natural 28-day menstrual cycle or allow four menstrual periods a year. The drug's maker, Wyeth, said nearly two-thirds of women it surveyed expressed an interest in giving up their periods. FDA approval is expected in May.
According to the NYT, studies have found no extra health risks associated with pills that stop menstruation, however, some doctors say there has not been enough research conducted on long-term effects.
