More On The PBS Shelving Of Film On Moderate Muslims

Topics: Follies of the Mainstream Media
The producers of "Islam vs. Islamists" say their taxpayer-funded film has been shelved by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) in "an ideological vendetta."
In our post "PBS Dropped 'Islam vs. Islamists' On Political Grounds" yesterday, we noted that a planned documentary depicts the plight of moderate Muslims who are silenced by Islamic extremists, adding, "Now it appears to be PBS and CPB who are silencing them." The film is subtitled Voices From the Muslim Center, and attempts to answer the question: 'Where are the moderate Muslims?' The film's producer says the answer is, 'Wherever they are, they are reviled and sometimes attacked' by extremists. The story is at The Washington Times today and is worth reading again. It seems to me that there ought to be a public outcry by truly moderate Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

And by the way, I'd sure like to know more about those "family ties to a British Islamist group" of the CPB series producer - Leo Eaton, who is refusing to air the film. Apparently Rep. James T. Walsh, New York Republican, screened then praised the film during a March 21 House hearing on CPB funding, and voiced his suspicions about CPB and PBS, saying Eaton has "overtly tried to change the context of the film." [It's worth noting that Eaton's father is Charles Le Gai Eaton, a "Muslim convert held in high regard in Islamist circles in Britain."]

You can read the CPB/PBS press release for the series here. Apparently the second of the two new selections, "The Brotherhood," features Newsweek journalists Mark Hosenball and Michael Isikoff, who together investigate whether members of the Muslim Brotherhood -- an international Islamic movement dedicated to spreading Sharia Law and reinstating the Caliphate -- are deadly enemies of the West, or people with whom the U.S. government should negotiate. I can see the liberal slant before my eyes already, give terrorists what they want which is to negotiate while they pursue their evil agenda undeterred. The rest of humanity call it al-taqiyya, I call it lying, cheating, and deceiving.

Here's a transcript of Hugh Hewitt interviewing Frank Gaffney about this: Why is PBS using our money to make a film that we're not allowed to see? (hat tip - LGF)

In the way of an addendum, here's examples of WETA tampering with the film exposing radical islam (see section titled "Debate about bias"):

• A WETA manager pressed to eliminate a key perspective of the film: The claim that Muslim radicals are pushing to establish "parallel societies" in America and Europe governed by Shariah law rather than sectarian courts.

• After grants were issued, Crossroads managers commissioned a new film that overlapped with Islam vs. Islamists and competed for the same interview subjects.

• WETA appointed an advisory board that includes Aminah Beverly McCloud, director of World Islamic Studies at DePaul University. In an "unparalleled breach of ethics," Burke says, McCloud took rough-cut segments of the film and showed them to Nation of Islam officials, who are a subject of the documentary. They threatened to sue.

"This utterly undermines any journalistic independence," Burke wrote in an e-mail to WETA officials.

In an interview, McCloud said she showed a single video frame to a Muslim journalist who was not a Nation of Islam representative.

However, in a January e-mail, McCloud told Crossroads producers that she had spoken with Nation of Islam representatives and "invited them over to view this section." She also wrote that they were outraged "and will promptly pursue litigation."

Stewart, the WETA executive, said McCloud was admonished for "inappropriate" conduct.
