Massacre At Virginia Tech (Updated x 5)Topics: National News
Updates in lower post ...
No real scoop here, just curiosity. What kind of maniac massacres 31 people? Dan Riehl considers the possibility of a romance gone bad, but I'm not buying into that. Too complex an incident with too many variables. Rumor is that the shooter is an Asian man in his 20s, had an ammo vest, multiple weapons, appears well planned. Could it be some kind of jihad spree killing like Trolley Square massacre in Salt Lake City?
There's interesting but not terribly informative info in the following videos:
Cell Phone Footage Of Virginia Tech Massacre:You can hear the rounds being fired. All kinds of reports are coming in with many different counts of those that were shot, killed, or wounded.
A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech on Monday, killing 25 people and wounding another 29 before he was killed, police said.
On the Web site, Tech reported the shootings at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall that houses 895 people, and said there were "multiple victims" at Norris Hall, an engineering building.
In this video one of the shooting victims describes the gunman, and says the gunman emptied a full magazine into the room, hitting between 10 to 15 people (hat tip - Hot Air).
Update 3: Dan Riehl on the "already-begun" media rush to blame someone:
Whenever there's a tragic event as there was today at Virginia Tech, we soon start hearing stories of counseling programs and how students are in danger of long term emotional issues as a result. Reading multiple threads on this Hokie bulletin board, I came away wondering if the press doesn't make it worse. The students commenting aren't saying too much good about the press. Along with the incident, it's as if they now see their institution being attacked. Perhaps they just aren't up for that right now.Via the Sun Times: Gunman kills 32 at Virginia Tech before being killed...
Authorities were investigating whether the gunman who killed 32 people on the Virginia Tech campus in the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history was a Chinese man who arrived in the United States last year on a student visa.Again, sounds very planned, very organized, and too prepared for a romance-related crime, but given the world we live in today, the romance-linked angle is certainly plausible.
The 24-year-old man arrived in San Francisco on United Airlines on Aug. 7 on a visa issued in Shanghai, the source said. Investigators have not linked him to any terrorist groups, the source said.
Police believe three bomb threats on the campus last week may have been attempts by the man to test the campus' security response, the source said.
The exits to the buildings where the shootings occurred were chained by the shooter, the source said.
UPDATE: - Regarding wild unverified rumor and images previously posted here received from a previous tip: We have subsequently received an email from someone (name and address withheld) claiming to know wanusmaximus, who said that we should consider removing the images related to wanusmaximus' site because he knows wanus.... not to be the killer. We have also been told that in spite of the many coincidences, wanusmaximus is surely not in any way related to the incident, and that he has already received calls from CBC, ABC, NPR and more. Owing to this latest email, we have removed the images and info, for now. If it is true that CBC, ABC, NPR, and others are checking out Wanusmaximus, he can look forward to a few visits from the "agencies" who will be most interested in his sites bizarre content.
Update: The Daily Mail has breaking news with much detail on the attack, including an image of an Asian man, clearly not the dead shooter, being handcuffed.
Update: The Reference Frame (hat tip - RWV) has it that the killer was a 6-foot tall male East Asian student from Radford University (where they just canceled a celebration), who was 24 years old, who has received his visa in Shanghai before he arrived on August 7th, and whose girlfriend from Virginia Tech dumped him two weeks ago.
He had two guns (at least one of which was a 9 mm caliber handgun) and wore a vest or a black leather jacket - probably a bulletproof vest - with too much ammunition in it as well as a maroon cap.The image below shows an Asian man pinned to the floor and handcuffed following the massacre. It is not known what, if any, role he played in the killings (Image: via Daily Mail)
In the morning around 7:15 am, he went to her dormitory at the fourth floor of the West Ambler Johnston Hall. If she were there, he shot her. If it wasn't her, he shot her female roommate and then the residential assistant, Ryan Clark of Martinez. They didn't shut down the university, so he continued and tried to find the ex-girlfriend or her new boyfriend in the engineering classrooms of the Norris Hall - see the picture above - a few hours later.
He didn't know the exact location, so he has visited a few classrooms and lined up all students against a wall. The worst massacre took place at 9:50 am in room 200 where the students were learning German 2105. He shot them one by one; yes, the professor, Jamie Bishop, died first. Finally, the calm animal killed himself by a shot into his head once he was cornered.
A "Maybe" Update (hat tip - Mike W): Is the shooters name "Cho" and did "Cho use a Glock 19 and a Walther P-22, with the serial number ground off the Glock? What makes this a bit fishy is that the guy supposedly left the receipt for the gun in his pocket from when he bought the gun!

You might want to remove wanusmaximus from your site. He is not the killer, he is one of my close friends. You can quote me on that. There are a lot of coincidences, but i can assure you its not him. He has received calls from the CBC, ABC, NPR and more.

The first killing at dorm may have been romance related. The second killing spree at the Engineering building was too well coordinated. The doors were chained and the gunman was armed to the teeth. It could be that the Engineering building gunman reacted to the news of the earlier killing at the dorm. Sensing that the campus police would be preoccupied in the dorm, he chose to take his time in order to execute as many engineering students as he could within the engineering building.
For the amount of coordination and the body count, I would be tempted to entertain this as a terrorist attack in which many gunmen participated ... or at least many associates abetted a lone gunman. It is quite possible that the suspected gunman is a patsy for the real party of horror.
The notion that the prior bomb-scares may have been orchestrated in order to appraise campus security and reaction has merit. The perpetrators of the Engineering building massacre could have known how much time that they had to carry out their deeds.

Harry, I've been thinking along the same lines as you, and I still think this may turn out to be a terrorist attack. After all, we're talking about jihad central on the East coast - Virginia. Yet if it is jihad-related, the govt is likely to cover it up and/or blame it on anything but ...
