Imus And The Outraged Afro-Americans

Topics: Human Interest

Reposted from comments at Imus Sent To Penalty Box For Two Weeks.

(In looking at the Imus flap) we need to keep in mind that many of these outraged Afro-Americans in the Imus flap were the very same in the Duke Rape Case. Given the drastic change of events in the Duke Rape Case, we could look at the Sharpton barrage as damage control. Specifically, the Afro-American community needs to bring Imus' faux pas to the forefront of the American media in order to drown out the egregious nature in which the Sharpton's of American defamed three affluent White students at Duke University.

As for the Rutgers case, clearly, Sharpton is overplaying his cards. Second, to make the statement that a band of Freshmen at Rutgers are composed of honor students ... well, I would like to see their grades and what courses these Freshmen were enrolled in. When that statement was uttered, I had a bad feeling that the Rutgers Basketball team was being played. Unfortunately, Rutgers could really take a hit here over future enrollments. Clearly, the statement by the Basketball coach was no advertisement for Rutgers. I would amplify, but there exists no need.

The words that Imus employed were not so grave as to warrant the current backlash. I watched the NCAA tournaments (both men & women). I saw the Rutgers team. Some Rutgers players did adorn tattoos, and their heads ... by they way that they wore their hair-holders ... gave the players the appearance of being loppy-headed. As far as the word "Ho," this is a word that the Afro-American community (men & women) exchange routinely ... more in jest that anything meaningful. Maybe what is needed is for the Afro-American community to police their own vocabulary rather than defame Imus for co-opting it on his show.

With the foregoing, I can only conclude that the Afro-American community has sounded the panic button over their handling of the Duke Rape Case ... and fear reprisals. Truly, the Afro-American community lost Big Time in the eyes of all Americans when the handling of the Duke Rape case was revealed. The Afro-American community may never recover from the fallout from the Duke Rape case.

Please understand that I am not supporting Imus. Unfortunately, I had the misfortune of spending of few hours at the international airport in Guam with Imus. Back then, I could tell that this fellow was cruising for a bruising. Whatever happened to Imus was on course to happen sooner or later.

If we are to judge Sharpton's behavior, let us watch his handling of the Duke Rape case ... let us see if he offers an apology!
