Breaking: VT Killer's Name Released (Updated)

Topics: National News

Just flashed on FoxNews: The killer is VT student Cho Seung Hui.

The first victim was Emily Hilscher, 18, after which another 31 students and staff were executed. (Image - The Daily Telegraph). Hilscher and Seung-Hui were neighbors in rooms 4040 and 4042 on the fourth floor of the West Ambler Johnston Hall dormitory.

Cho was referred last year to counseling after professors became concerned about the violent nature of his writings, as evidenced in a one-act play obtained by The Smoking Gun.
The play by Cho Seung-Hui, a 23-year-old English major, was submitted last year as part of a short story writing class. Entitled "Richard McBeef," Cho's bizarre play features a 13-year-old boy who accuses his stepfather of pedophilia and murdering his father. A copy of the killer's play can be found below. The teenager talks of killing the older man and, at one point, the child's mother brandishes a chain saw at the stepfather. The play ends with the man striking the child with "a deadly blow." Via VOA we learn that the South Korean government has already expressed its condolences to the victims of Monday's massacre after learning that the suspected gunman was a South Korean national:

Officials say 23-year-old Cho Seung-hui, who was identified by police as the gunman, had been living in the United States since he was a boy. He was a legal resident alien, commonly known as a green-card holder.
And from the same article, we learn that the tragedy has effective others throughout the world.
The Associated Press reports there is deep grieving in India and Israel, both of which had citizens killed in the massacre who were lecturers at Virgina Tech.

In London, Britain's Queen Elizabeth said she was "shocked and saddened" by the shootings.

The queen is scheduled to visit Virginia next month to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the United States. British Prime Minister Tony Blair also offered his condolences.

Pope Benedict said he is praying for the victims and their families of what he termed a "senseless tragedy."

Dan Riehl has it that the first victim wrestled with Cho for the gun. Emily, the first victim, was shot while running away. Also via Dan Riehl, AllahPundit has word he told someone he was going to kill people at VaTech.

Blogger SASS via Dan says Emily had broken up with Cho-Seung-hui about two weeks prior to yesterday; what had started as a promising relationship had turned into a controlling, almost volatile situation.

Cho Seung-hui was very dependent upon Emily. He looked to her as his 'saving grace' and felt that every spare moment the two had, should be spent together. At first, Emily was charmed by his attentiveness, but began to slowly feel isolated, controlled, stagnant. Cho Seung-hui didn't take the break-up well, for the past two weeks he had been trying to convince Emily they belonged together.
Fox has a full spread of details and facts about Cho Seung-Hui and facts behind the attack and its aftermath.

Gateway Pundit has full coverage of the victims, including images.

In an update of sorts, LGF points to Allahpundit as updating frequently with new information on the Virginia Tech murders.

Apparently, South Korean student Seung Hui Cho signed his note, "Ismail Ax," and also wrote those words on his arm. All other signs right now point to this being a deranged individual with a history of odd behavior (not a "sudden jihadi"), but this is very curious.

The reference to Ismail's Ax is indeed very curious, and the issue was addressed by a commenter (naliaka on April 17, 2007 at 12:57 PM) at Allah:

Ishmael's Ax refers to a smashing through of a temple of idols with an ax.
If this information is correct, that Ismail's Ax was written on the man's arm, plus the items in the note are true, with Cho's note mentioning of "debauchery" and "rich", seems that Cho may have been acting out a religious cleansing ritual, akin to destroying idols, which are hated by the radical Muslims. ... Loner, disturbed, previous violent indicators, Koran - NOT Korean, but the book, just the kind of guy certain bad people look for to incite to big violence.... The guy's computer, plus where he practiced shooting before he did this ... t[h]ere's a lot to learn.
If this is all true, then the symbolism of the Israeli professor standing between the students and the Ax of Ismail is chilling.
So just "Who or what is Ismail Ax" you ask? Commenters at Boing Boing are apparently taking on the task of trying to find out.

In the meanwhile, as we all have learned to expect from the liberal media, Newsweek busies itself with trying to understand what made Seung Hui "do it," and in the process go through the customary psychobabble regarding what psychologists tell us about the mind of the mass murderer. (I'm not particularly concerned about Seung Hui's aggrieveness, hurt, and paranoia. I only care that the son-of-a-bitch is dead as hell!

And in the way of a solid Editorial Round-Up of the VT Massacre, you'll find it at Real Clear Politics.

To all:

This link provides two of Sueng Cho's essays:

Richard McBeef and Mr. Brownstone.

These two essays reveal an insight into the troubled mind of the gunman. Regrettably, most of Cho's classmates suspect Cho's involvement in the massacre prior to any announcement as to the gunman's identity.

When everyone suspects a person, there should have been far more surveillance on this guy than there was. What happened at VT was preventable.

With Aloha,
