Obama To Supporters: 'Soldiers Lives Were Wasted'

Topics: Political News and commentaries

Sen. Barack Obama argues that the members of the military who volunteered to serve, and died in Iraq, wasted his or her life:

Jackson Simpson at The National Ledger describes the Obama missteps perfectly:

[...] Barack Obama is off and running for president. The items covered first by the inexperienced senator from Illinois, attack one of America's great allies and their soldiers and attack the sacrifice of the soldiers from America that are laying their lives on the line in Iraq. First up, Australia. The sophomore senator sounded off like a sophomoric political hack.

His target was Australia's Prime Minister John Howard. "Howard had said that Senator Obama's call for U.S. troops to be withdrawn from Iraq by March 2008 would deliver a victory for terrorists and destabilize the entire Middle East." Howard said: "If I was running al-Qaeda in Iraq, I would put a circle around March 2008 and pray, as many times as possible, for a victory not only for Obama, but also for the Democrats."

Obama fired back like a kid on a playground. "I think it's flattering that one of George Bush's allies on the other side of the world started attacking me the day after I announced...I would also note that we have close to 140,000 troops in Iraq, and my understanding is Mr. Howard has deployed 1400, so if he is...to fight the good fight in Iraq, I would suggest that he calls up another 20,000 Australians and sends them to Iraq....Otherwise it's just a bunch of empty rhetoric."

Scott Johnson called it this way. 'Obama not only insulted our ally, he formulated the insult in the inelegant fashion of an intellectual thug.' That's close enough. Right out of the gate, Obama wants to belittle the Australian troops in Iraq.

... Just so they wouldn't feel left out, Barack decided to belittle the American troops as well. The senator made this blunder during a speech at Iowa State University. On Sunday he criticized the war in Iraq as a conflict that had "wasted" more than 3,000 American soldiers' lives. Someone must have told Obama that was a poor choice as he did the quasi backtrack the very next day.

To say that Obama and his supporters are out of touch with the realities of the war, would be a massive understatement. Perhaps his majesty, the anointed one (by the media), should hear from those who know of what they speak.

Here's a few examples from Michelle Malkin:

Barack Obama, meet 2LT Mark Daily and read why he joined. (This was his MySpace post explaining his decision to enter the military. When I read it I had tears in my eyes.)

Barack Obama, meet Marine Sgt. Joshua J. Frazier, whose brother and father are quoted below:

Aaron Mallin, 29, Frazier's older brother, said Josh was proud of the difference he was making in Iraq. He once told Mallin, for instance, that his unit was serving in what has been described as the most dangerous intersection in the world.

Since Frazier and his fellow Marines moved in, he told Mallin, people could once again cross the street without being killed.

"And he was very proud of that," Mallin said.

Dad Rick Frazier said his son's strong will was what made him unique.

"That helped him get through life. He worked very hard at being an individual. But I think the most important thing I can say about my son was that he loved his family and we'll sorely miss that part of him," he said.

"He believed in the United States and believed what he was doing was right. He gave his life for what he thought was the right thing to do."

Barack Obama, meet Jackie Sigua, whose 21-year-old son, William M. Sigua of Los Altos Hills, Calif., was killed in Iraq earlier this month:
Sigua joined the Army in July 2003 and reported to Fort Bragg in March 2004. Six months later, he deployed to Afghanistan to help with security during the country's elections. He deployed with his unit to Iraq in August.

Sigua's mother Jackie said her son recently established a relationship with a 5th grade class at Santa Rita Elementary School in Los Altos, Calif. He exchanged mail with the children and talked about what he was doing in Iraq, she said.

In a written statement, Jackie Sigua also said that her son believed in the mission in Iraq.

"He believed he and his unit would make a difference," she said. "He had an impact on everyone he met and had many friends who looked up to him and will remember him as a hero."

Barack Obama, meet Cpl. Jeffrey B. Starr, whose last words the New York Times attempted to twist to serve an anti-war agenda:
"Obviously if you are reading this then I have died in Iraq. I kind of predicted this, that is why I'm writing this in November. A third time just seemed like I'm pushing my chances. I don't regret going, everybody dies but few get to do it for something as important as freedom. It may seem confusing why we are in Iraq, it's not to me. I'm here helping these people, so that they can live the way we live. Not have to worry about tyrants or vicious dictators. To do what they want with their lives. To me that is why I died. Others have died for my freedom, now this is my mark."
AS Michelle points out, "we could go on, but it would be a complete waste of breath trying to get Sen. Obama to acknowledge the existence of countless soldiers and their families who reject his patronizing, infantilizing, and insulting view of all American troops as dupes/victims who have squandered their lives.

In the way of an update, Obama now says he regrets saying soldiers' lives 'wasted'.

Oh please. It is clear that he was talking about the decisions of the policy makers, who bungled the war effort, not about the troops. It is also clear that PM Howard was out of line when he said that if he was a terrorist he would pray for Obama's election.

You conservatives will do just about anything to avoid blaming the President for the Iraq debacle.

Wrong on all points. Howard said nothing that wasn't already said by Zawahiri and Ahmadinejad. As for Bush, most conservatives are quick to criticize his mistakes, but don't suffer from BDS and give him credit for recognizing the threat from radical Islam and for recognizing the importance of taking the fight to the enemy.

Good try though!
