'Bomb Mecca' Countered By Attack On Cigar
Topics: Political News and commentariesI think The Hill frames the story the same way I would, saying that Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) believes it is his right as a Muslim to be sworn into Congress with the Quran - but apparently, the freshman lawmaker doesn't believe it's Rep. Tom Tancredo's (R-Colo.) right to smoke a cigar in his congressional office:
Ellison's office called the Capitol Hill Police on Tancredo last Wednesday night as Tancredo was in his office smoking a cigar. The lawmakers have neighboring offices on the first floor of the Longworth House Office Building.I find it hard to believe that Tancredo's suggestion on a talk show that we should bomb Mecca if Islamic terrorists struck American cities, doesn't have something to do with Ellison calling the cops on Tancredo for puffing on a cigar in his own office. You'll recall that Talk show host Pat Campbell asked Tancredo how the country should respond if terrorists struck several U.S. cities with nuclear weapons, which resulted in this exchange:Tancredo was still stunned a day later. "It's very bizarre," said Tancredo, who has never met Ellison. "Seemed to me not a good way to say hello."
And let's face it. Calling the cops on a colleague takes the cake for the nerviest behavior so far among members of this year's freshman class of Congress.
"Well, what if you said something like -- if this happens in the United States, and we determine that it is the result of extremist, fundamentalist Muslims, you know, you could take out their holy sites," Tancredo answered.Since I don't smoke and never did, I sympathize with Ellison on the smoke issue. But a rookie calling the cops on a veteran colleague is indeed bizarre. It also is somewhat telling of Ellison's tolerance for those that disagree with him or has opposing values."You're talking about bombing Mecca," Campbell said.
"Yeah," Tancredo responded.
