On The Holocaust...

The massacre of thousands, even millions, of people - as with the heinous ethnic cleansing of the Armenians in Turkey during the first decade of the last century - has been a sorrowful corollary of the bestial part of our human nature and of our human condition, and it has ignominiously occurred repeatedly innumerable times since the dawn of history. In the words of a forgotten writer: "Ever since the dawn of man, man has lived in the "Days of Wrath..."

Yet, the monstrosity and horror of the Holocaust is an event unequaled in the history of humanity! It defies all attempts at depiction! There are no words that could ever possibly describe it! Only an unspeakable, terrifying, and utter silence can ever attempt to embrace it!

The Holocaust, perhaps by its proximity to us in time; perhaps by the enormity of the carnage and the slaughter; perhaps because of the systematic orderly way in which the annihilation of millions of human beings was carried out; perhaps because we see in those who perpetrated it a twisted, mocking, bestial reflection of our own selves, with our inflated self-confidence in our moral mores and social conventions in spite of our prejudices, believing ourselves "civilized" and "reasoning," "Homo Sapiens," while the savage beast in us all lurks under a thinly veiled veneer of culture and civility, always lurching to break free from within us; perhaps because such atrocious monstrosities were not perpetrated by a barbaric people, but by a supposedly highly civilized, cultured, and disciplined nation, who by the beginning of the 20th century were the very epitome of Western Civilization, of Music, Literature, the Arts and Sciences, of Technology - the most sophisticated and technologically advanced People of their time; is unique in infamy in the annals of humanity!

And what is most incomprehensibly monstrous about the unspeakable Genocide of the Holocaust, carried out by such a sophisticated and cultured People, is the detached, efficient, and meticulous way in which those who perpetrated it went about it - devoid of all humanity - keeping meticulous written records with impeccable bureaucracy; running trains packed with suffocating human beings being sent to the slaughterhouses and the ovens with precision - on schedule; harvesting their personal belongings, their labor, their very bodies and body parts - as with women's hair and gold capped teeth and silver dental work - with a repugnant, diabolical, empirical efficiency...where even their very ashes from the ovens was used to fertilize the growing of the meager food of the camps!

To such as Ahmadinejad and all those who would deny the horrors of the Holocaust, who pretend to rationalize that most horrendous and heinous crime in the history of humanity, who claim that such inhuman horrors never took place, or would justify their perpetration in any manner: Only the haunting eyes in the skeletal visages of those millions with numbers tatooed on their wrists; the images of the burning piles of human carcasses in the smouldering pits, the emaciated bodies being bulldozed into common graves; of the piles of bones, the ashes and osamenta spilling out of the meticulously built, efficiently run, ovens; of the prisoners sitting amongst the dissecated corpses; only these are a proper rebuke to their unspeakable venom! They may as well shut their eyes facing the sun and say that no sun exists while it burns and peels their faces with its rays! The images of those in Auschwitz, Birkenau, Belzec, Sobibor, Dachau, Maidanek, Treblinka... all those who suffered, who were dehumanized, all those who were bestially tortured, brutalized and murdered, all those who perished, all those who survived to carry the searing scars of their experience and all they witnessed in their souls to haunt them and populate their nightmares for the rest of their lives, indict them!

Let all those who deny the gruesome stark reality of the Holocaust scroll down through all these pictures and see if they can claim that it never happened:

Subject: Picture Interpretation
Dear Althor:

Although employing pictures in order to advance a point is often appropriate and effective, we must ask ourselves about the identity of those who took those pictures. Additionally, some pictures require an explanation in order to advance the intention(s) of their author.

Sixty-five million (65,000,000) people died in World War II. How did those relegated to their disposal of their carcasses perform their task? The alleged Death Camps processed a maximum of some six million, on the most expansive estimate ... less than ten percent (10%) of the total attrition. Also, the Death Camps were not Jewish-only facilities.

As for the Middle East, the Arabs were not involved in any of the Eurasian carnage of World War II. Accordingly, their reluctance to become the solution to the atrocities is understandable. To me, their point is not that a slaughter of people did not take place in Europe, their point is that: 1) those slaughtered were not all Jews and 2) the Muslims were not involved.

In closing, I would ask you to review the pictures that you posted and allow your imagination to envision other scenarios for the production of their contents. Additionally, ask yourself how you know, for certain, that the individuals in those pictures are Jews who were exterminated by the NAZIs, keeping in mind that sixty-five million people were killed in World War II ... most killed in the reasonable vicinity of the Death Camps.

Caveat: I am not advocating that a holocaust did not occur; however, I am questioning its extent that has been promoted. Also, as you may be aware, I am predicting another, more inclusive holocaust by the year 2050.

Now, if even with the thousands of extant pictures documenting the horrors of the Holocaust that exist, even when looking at those haunting images people question their meaning and validity, and therefore the atrocious reality of the Holocaust itself, imagine if we would only rely on hearsay, the awful tale of the survivors, and on documents (which do exist), to show the world the horrors that took place behind the electrified fences and the barbed wire!

Pictures may be a very appropriate and effective way to advance a point, but no picture can encompass the horror of the acrid smoke, the sickly-sweet odor of burning flesh, the smell of rotting corpses, and the stench of the barracks; no picture can portray the pain of the hunger and malnutrition, the itch of the lice and the parasites, the hypothermia of the cold and the dampness...the dehumanization and the utter hopelessness! But would rather say that in that respect all those picturesare woefully inadequate!

Your arguments are the very same arguments upon which many of those denying the Holocaust base themselves to justify their positions of denial!

You ask who took those pictures, insinuating that perhaps those bodies and pile of bones were of those other 59 million victims of the war rather than of the 6 million Jews who were massacred.

Your observations are eerily reminiscent of some of the arguments Holocaust deniers, such as those who gathered at the feet of Ahmadinejad last week in Teheran, have made for years, and play into their arguments: That those pictures are not of Jews, or of victims of the Holocaust, but that the “Evil Zionists” have made it appeared so, and manipulated them to claim that the Holocaust happened, and that in some instances the movie reels and the pictures were actually “staged” by the Zionists!

In the first place Nazis were very open about their intention of wiping the Jewish People off the face of the earth, the final solution, much as Ahmadinejad has so often decried to the four winds similar intentions nowadays, which the world, much as it happened during WWII, pretends not to hear and looks the other way!

The Nazis were meticulous record-keepers. In those same batches of photos above, there are photos of the invoices and documents pertaining to the Zyklon-B gas used in the Gas Chambers, along with labels, and of empty cans of the gas that our troops found when they marched into the camps - all those documents, the labels, and the empty cans of Zyklon-B phisically exist to this day and are archival material of the Holocaust. In like manner, the records of the inhuman medical experiments which were carried out in Auchwitz also remain, mute testimony of unspeakable horrors!

Pictures such as those of Synagogues burning, or Jews being publicly beaten and harassed in Pogroms; such as those above of Nazis cutting the beard of a Jewish Elder, abusing him and humiliating him; or of the boy being chided, mocked, and ridiculed in front of his classmates for being a Jew, with the anti-Semitic slogan written on the blackboard behind him; were taken by Nazi photographers to be used for propaganda purposes to fuel and incite German anti-Semitism, and were proudly bandied about by the Nazis, who not only would regularly publish them, and make them public, but were all but too happy and eager to do so to advance their agenda of bigotry!

Most of those other graphic pictures showing the mass graves, the smouldering pits, and the slaughter, were proudly taken by SS Officers, who were only too happy to take them to send to their superiors, to prove how successful their campaign was in the execution of the "Final Solution" they were trying to achieve, and to gloat over how many "hated Jews" had been killed. Others were taken by our own horrified military when they first went into the camps...just ask the American soldiers manning the bulldozers shoving corpses into a common grave, or loading the emaciated cadavers unto trucks....what they saw with their own eyes were no “pictures” craftily manipulated by Zionism, as you seem to imply.

Pray tell me if the picture of the naked Jews being shot in Russia at the edge of open pits, or that of the man shot in the head by a Nazi officer at the edge of the mass grave already full with corpses, are those pictures of the victims of Allied bombing raids, or of the war, as you say, that the German were simply disposing of their bodies? Are the haunting pictures of Auchwitz, Buchenwald, Belsen, Birkenau, Belzec, Sobibor, Dachau, Maidakek, Treblinka , et al, that of German “sanitation” facilities were all they were doing was innocently dispose of those other 59 million victims of the war then, in your estimation? Perhaps they were using Zyklon-B as a “disinfectant”???

I suppose the picture above of the emaciated Jewish children that were being used for unspeakable medical experiments in Auchwitz, is actually the picture of poor German children victims of the war, whom Dr. Josef Mengele, “The Angel of Death,” was nurturing back to health???

I suppose that the huge mounds of shoes and clothes, of eyeglasses, of gold capped teeth and silver dental work, of discarded toys and dolls, many of which remain to this day as mute, silent witnesses of all the horror, were those of those other 59 million victims of the war too, right???

And oh yes! All those pictures of the survivors our troops encountered when they first walked into the camps; of walking skeletons with wide, haunting eyes, barely but bags of yellowish skin and bones; I suppose those were also staged by the Zionists. I imagine they had to lock up the actors and starve them for a year in order to achieve the desired “emaciated” cinematic effect! Wouldn’t you say???

It is true that the Camps did not only house Jews marked for extermination. Gypsies and other minorities were also rounded up; by the end of the war even Catholics were being interned as “Non-Aryan” to be “sanitized” along the Jews and Gypsies. But what you fail to mention is that the total number of people who died in the Nazi Death Camps was in upwards of 10 millions. Six millions were Jews, the rest were comprised of those Gypsies, Catholics, and other minorities. Jews were not the only victims of the Holocaust, but the Holocaust, and the “Final Solution” from which it stemmed, was aimed at them from the start, and six million Jews from all over Europe were exterminated in the Camps!

As to the Arabs, they may not have been directly involved in, as you say, the carnage in Europe, but indeed they had very close ties to the Nazi butchers and shared in their anti-Semitic goals of Jewish extermination. To quote an excellent essay on the subject by David Storobin, Esq:

“The end of World War I brought an end to the Ottoman colonization of Palestine. Towards the end of the war, Britain issued the Balfour Declaration supporting the “establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people . . . .” The original reaction of the Arabs was mixed. While many Arabs opposed the Zionists, Emir Faisal – who was the son of former Mecca ruler Sherif Hussein and later King of Iraq – signed in 1919 a declaration in support of the Balfour Declaration, even supporting all necessary measures “...to encourage and stimulate immigration of Jews into Palestine on a large scale, and as quickly as possible to settle Jewish immigrants upon the land through closer settlement and intensive cultivation of the soil.”

In the very own words of the Mufti written in his infamous post-WWII memoirs, quote:

“Our fundamental condition for cooperating with Germany was a free hand to eradicate every last Jew from Palestine and the Arab world. I asked Hitler for an explicit undertaking to allow us to solve the Jewish problem in a manner befitting our national and racial aspirations and according to the scientific methods innovated by Germany in the handling of its Jews. The answer I got was: 'The Jews are yours.'” - Former Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin al-Husseini in his post-WWII memoirs.”

If anything, this amply proves that the similarities between the Islamofacism threatening today, not only the Jews and Israel, but indeed the whole world, and Hitler’s Nazism, are not merely coincidental! Islamofacism is but the scion of Nazism, and the Islamofacists the new, true, “Little Eichmans,” and not their victims of 9/11, as Professor Ward Churchill outrageously proclaims!

So as to the point of those “Apologists” of the Holocaust you mentioned:
1) Yes, not all those slaughtered in the Concentration Camps were Jews, however, six million of them were in fact killed in the Camps, and while others died there as well, we must never forget that the Camps were planned, built, intended, and primarily used for the explicit systematic annihilation of the entire Jewish race in Europe - “The Final Solution”!

2) And no, though Muslims may not have been physically involved in Europe in the extermination of the Jews, they definitely were involved in what the Mufti himself so proudly proclaims in his memoirs as quoted above, and had, in his own words, “...a free hand to eradicate every last Jew from Palestine and the Arab world...” and in all the turmoil and violence unleashed in Palestine at the time upon the Jewish settlers, before Israel became a nation!

In closing, I review such pictures, and a knot forms in my throat.

To see how millions of people were systematically packed in suffocating railcars in conditions worst than those endured by cattle; shipped to Camps that were nothing but slaughterhouses, where the strong were forced into slave labor, while the weak and infirm were mass murdered in gas chambers and their ashes from the crematoriums used as “fertilizer” to grow cabbages; where men, women, and children were used for unspeakable medical experiments; where even the strong slowly withered, emaciated by hunger and disease; where their bodies were burned in pits when the crematoriums were too full to capacity to handle the extra workload even though working around the clock, and their bones piled outside the barracks; were human beings were stripped of their very humanity in a methodical, calculated, and extremely efficient manner.... and all because of what? Because of their crimes? Because of their sins? Because they were good or bad men and women? As a result of their own actions? No! They suffered and died horribly thus, only because they were JEWS!

Caveat: You claim you are not promoting the denial of the Holocaust, yet, reasoning and arguments such as you advocate, are fodder for Holocaust deniers such as Ahmadinejad and his cohort at last week’s infamous Teheran Conference, and the fuel upon which the flames of much anti-Semitism feeds!

As to your predictions, I believe that the attempt to once again wipe Israel and the Jews off the face of the earth in another, worldwide, Holocaust, will come long before the year 2050. Partly fueled by Arab, Muslim, and Jihadist hatred, as with Ahmadinejad; partly by the anti-Semitism ingrained in European society, which will look the other way; and partly by reasoning such as yours...

Yet, even as John the Baptist said: “From these very stones God can raise children unto Abraham.” It is so, and the world will be amazed to see how, when the armies of those wishing to wipe Israel off the face of the earth congregate to launch their final offensive which would culminate in that other Holocaust you foretell, from every nook and cranny, from each and every corner of the world, people of every race and color, of many persuasions, will all flock to Israel to defend it, and come to its aid!

They will fight side by side with the IDF Israeli soldiers, and it will be Israel and the Jewish People and their allies who will prevail!

May God grant me that I live long enough that I may be there to defend Israel, and that I may fight alongside the IDF soldiers, even to my last dying breath! I shall be there to fight for Israel and our Jewish brothers! I, and my sons besides me!

I asked you a very direct question. Obviously, you do not know the answer and choose to retort in your usual demeaning and insulting manner.

Your tirade response does nothing to advance your advertisement.

Without an authentication of the pictures, one remains bewildered as to how the people of the Middle East are victimized for these alleged
European atrocities.

In corollary, American, British and Dutch prisoners of war in the Pacific Theater resembled many of the destitute and starving persons depicted in your pictures of Eastern Europe. Are we to conclude that the Japanese Forces engaged in a holocaust?

The Germans and the Japanese suffered deprivation as their war supplies were strained from Allied advances and actions. Without sufficient supplies, prisoners of war received drastically less provisions than combat or support troops. Some entire populations in Eastern Europe were similarly without replenishments for months on end. Starvation was common, and with starvation comes an array of plagues.

The second question I posed was how the 65 million carcasses were disposed. Do you know? I would venture to say that the Germans ... and others ... did not take the time to bury them in individual graves ... especially those infected with cholera, etc.

Lastly, as an insight, the Germans were really strained for raw materials and places to store them. Some of your pictures may represent storage areas for secondhand or clothing removed from victims of Allied bombardment.

Lastly, I will leave this discussion with a thought: where would you dispose of the entire population of the City of Los Angeles (estimated at 40 million)?

British historian David Irving was arrested in Austria on November 11, 2005. He was charged under a federal law that makes it a crime to publicly diminish, deny or justify the Holocaust. Irving pleaded guilty and was convicted on February 20, 2006, of denying the Holocaust and sentenced to three years in prison.

Facing up to 10 years in prison, Irving said during his one-day trial that he now acknowledged the Nazis’ World War II slaughter of six million Jews and admitted, “I made a mistake when I said there were no gas chambers at Auschwitz.”

In the past, however, Irving claimed that Adolf Hitler knew little if anything about the Holocaust, and suggested there was “not one shred of evidence” the Nazis carried out their “Final Solution” to exterminate the Jewish population on such a massive scale. He insisted that most of the victims at concentration camps such as Auschwitz died of diseases such as typhus rather than execution.

In 2000, Irving sued American Holocaust scholar Deborah Lipstadt for libel in a British court, but lost. The presiding judge in that case, Charles Gray, wrote that Irving was “an active Holocaust denier ... anti-Semitic and racist.”

Irving’s lawyer said he would appeal the sentence.

Comment: Why was this man jailed? One has to wonder what constitutes criminal activity in Austria that would warrant imprisonment for questioning the extent of the Holocaust, given the plethora of carnage overwhelming the populations at the time.

Holocaust denial is illegal in a number of European countries: Austria (article 3h Verbotsgesetz 1947), Belgium (Belgian Negationism Law), the Czech Republic under section 261, France (Loi Gayssot), Germany (§ 130 (3) of the penal code) also the Auschwitzlüge law section 185, Lithuania, The Netherlands under articles 137c and 137e, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain and Switzerland (article 261bis of the Penal Code). Many of these countries also have broader laws against libel or inciting racial hatred, as do a number of countries that do not specifically have laws against Holocaust denial, such as Canada and the United Kingdom. The Council of Europe's 2003 Additional Protocol to the Convention on Cyber Crime, concerning the criminalisation of acts of a racist and xenophobic nature committed through computer systems includes an article 6 titled Denial, gross minimisation, approval or justification of genocide or crimes against humanity, though this does not have the status of law.

Of the countries that ban Holocaust denial, a number (Austria, Germany, Romania and Slovakia) were among the perpetrators of the Holocaust, and many of these also ban other elements associated with Nazism, such as Nazi symbols. Chomsky subsequently wrote an essay entitled Some Elementary Comments on the Rights of Freedom of Expression, in which he attacked his critics for failing to respect the principle of freedom of speech, and defended Faurisson himself against charges that he was an anti-Semite or a neo-Nazi.

Note first that even if Faurisson were to be a rabid anti-Semite and fanatic pro-Nazi -- such charges have been presented to me in private correspondence that it would be improper to cite in detail here -- this would have no bearing whatsoever on the legitimacy of the defense of his civil rights. On the contrary, it would make it all the more imperative to defend them since, once again, it has been a truism for years, indeed centuries, that it is precisely in the case of horrendous ideas that the right of free expression must be most vigorously defended; it is easy enough to defend free expression for those who require no such defense. Putting this central issue aside, is it true that Faurisson is an anti-Semite or a neo-Nazi? As noted earlier, I do not know his work very well. But from what I have read -- largely as a result of the nature of the attacks on him -- I find no evidence to support either conclusion. Nor do I find credible evidence in the material that I have read concerning him, either in the public record or in private correspondence. As far as I can determine, he is a relatively apolitical liberal of some sort.
Chomsky granted permission for the essay to be used for any purpose. Serge Thion then used it as a preface when publishing a book by Faurisson, without Chomsky's knowledge. Later Chomsky requested that the essay not be used in this manner, since he believed the French intellectual community was so incapable of understanding freedom of speech that it would only confuse them further, but his request came too late for the book to be changed. Chomsky subsequently said that asking for the preface to be removed is his one regret in the matter.

Chomsky's essay sparked an even greater controversy.

Critics such as Pierre Vidal-Naquet attacked him not for defending the principle of freedom of speech, but for defending Faurisson personally against charges of anti-Semitism and upholding his work as historical inquiry:

The simple truth, Noam Chomsky, is that you were unable to abide by the ethical maxim you had imposed. You had the right to say: my worst enemy has the right to be free, on condition that he not ask for my death or that of my brothers. You did not have the right to say: my worst enemy is a comrade, or a "relatively apolitical sort of liberal." You did not have the right to take a falsifier of history and to recast him in the colors of truth. [7]

Vidal-Naquet offered the following argument to substantiate his characterisation of Faurisson as an antisemite:

I shall simply say: Faurisson's personal anti-Semitism, in fact, interests me rather little. It exists and I can testify to it, but it is nothing compared with the anti- Semitism of his texts. Is it anti-Semitic to write with consummate calm that in requiring Jews to wear the yellow star starting at the age of six "Hitler was perhaps less concerned with the Jewish question than with ensuring the safety of German soldiers" (Vérité, p. 190) ? Certainly not, within Faurisson's logic, since in the final analysis there is no practical anti-Semitism possible. But within Chomsky's logic? Is the invention of an imaginary declaration of war against Hitler, in the name of the international Jewish community, by an imaginary president of the World Jewish Congress, a case of anti-Semitism or of deliberate falsification? (Vidal-Naquet, op. cit.)

John Goldsmith writes that "Unsympathetic critics used it as an opportunity to brand Chomsky with anti-Semitic labels, but even critics potentially sympathetic to Chomsky's political views felt his remarks showed lack of judgment." [8]

Other critics held that Faurisson's statements were the archetype of anti-Semitism, and that the logical conclusion of Chomsky's statement would be that Nazism was not anti-Semitic. The main argument for this is that Holocaust deniers are not interested in truth, but "motivated by racism, extremism, and virulent anti-Semitism" ([9] Deborah Lipstadt, in Dimensions, the journal of the ADL).

Chomsky's response:

Subsequently, Chomsky argued that there was a difference between the acceptance of historical facts (in this case, the existence of gas chambers, denied by Faurisson) and the attitude towards certain people (hatred of the Jews, anti-Semitism, perhaps also held by Faurisson):

"I see no anti-Semitic implications in denial of the existence of gas chambers or even denial of the Holocaust. Nor would there be anti-Semitic implications, per se, in the claim that the Holocaust (whether one believes it took place or not) is being exploited, viciously so, by apologists for Israeli repression and violence. I see no hint of anti-Semitic implications in Faurisson's work." (quoted in Noam Chomsky's Search for the Truth)
He later elaborated:

"In that context, I made a further point: even denial of the Holocaust would not prove that a person is an anti-Semite. I presume that that point too is not subject to contention. Thus if a person ignorant of modern history were told of the Holocaust and refused to believe that humans are capable of such monstrous acts, we would not conclude that he is an anti-Semite. That suffices to establish the point at issue." [10]
Currently on Chomsky's own website he states:

"A professor of French literature was suspended from teaching on grounds that he could not be protected from violence, after privately printing pamphlets questioning the existence of gas chambers. He was then brought to trial for "falsification of History," and later condemned for this crime, the first time that a modern Western state openly affirmed the Stalinist-Nazi doctrine that the state will determine historical truth and punish deviation from it. Later he was beaten practically to death by Jewish terrorists. As of now, the European and other intellectuals have not expressed any opposition to these scandals; rather, they have sought to disguise their profound commitment to Stalinist-Nazi doctrine by following the same models, trying to divert attention with a flood of outrageous lies.

[A]s to the minor matter of my role ... it has been the subject of a flood of lies and deceit...
In His Right to Say It, published in The Nation, Chomsky states: "It seems to me something of a scandal that it is even necessary to debate these issues two centuries after Voltaire defended the right of free expression for views he detested. It is a poor service to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust to adopt a central doctrine of their murderers." He stressed the conceptual distinction between endorsing someone's view and defending his right to say it.

Comment: As someone who studied the Holocaust as a Graduate Student, I am appalled at what I just posted here. Never at any time during my course of study did I encounter issues concerning any hint of a Holocaust Denial. All the materials presented in sessions and researched by me at the Graduate Library presented what I believed to be factual evidence about the Holocaust in Europe and other holocausts (mass genocide) in other areas of the world.

What emerges as irking is that laws have been enacted to silence any research into the actual events of the Holocaust in Europe that might diminish its scope. Those who encroach upon research that clouds the claims of the Holocaust are labeled anti-Semite and ostracized. Those who publish such diminishing research to the established claims of the Holocaust are convicted of abusing their rights to freedom of speech.

Clearly, there exists something wrong with this picture.

Column missed target on Mideast violence

Regarding the column by Bridget Johnson of the Los Angeles Daily News about what would Jesus see if he came today in the Holy Land (Star-Bulletin, Dec. 21): Johnson criticized Hamas, Fatah and Hezbollah for their violence. Since either she or the Star-Bulletin is too ignorant to recognize facts from hyperbole, let me point out one item they seemed to have missed.

Since the beginning of the second intifada in September 2000, Israeli human rights organization B'tselem reports that there have been 3,930 Palestinians murdered by illegally occupying Israeli IDF forces in occupied territories, while 801 Israeli citizens were killed as legal (according to U.S. military standards) collateral deaths in the Palestinian struggle for freedom against Israel.

If you are going to let Johnson's drivel be printed, at least have the courage to print whole truths.

Comment: I checked both the Honolulu Advertiser and the Star Bulletin December 21st editions for the referenced article and could not locate it; however, I do recall sighting it on a prior read the day that it was released. Additionally, offensive/inaccurate articles have been known to be pulled from the Internet venues of both newspapers.

Is the figure of 3,930 Palestinians murdered by Israeli forces accurate? I do not know. If the figure is accurate, then we have witnessed Jewish revisionism (creative writing) in progress.

Ahmadinejad Handshake Leaves Rabbi's Neighbors Crying Foul

MONSEY, N.Y. — The photograph is jarring, to say the least. Why on earth would a rabbi from New York travel to Tehran to embrace Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a man who says the Holocaust never happened and that Israel should be annihilated?

In Rockland County, N.Y., a short drive north from New York City, "love thy neighbor" has been a hard commandment to follow in the weeks since a contingent of fringe religious leaders set out to shake the Iranian president's hand.

This small suburban county has the highest percentage of Jews in the nation, and many if not most of them have been seething since leaders of the ultra-Orthodox sect Neturei Karta attended the Holocaust conference in Tehran and seemingly lent their support to known Holocaust deniers.

Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Weiss led the Neturei Karta delegation to Iran's capital on Dec. 11 to participate in a two-day conference on whether the Holocaust occurred. Among the other attendees were former Ku Klux Klan Imperial Wizard David Duke and French professor and gas-chamber denier Robert Fuerisson.

This kind of cozying up to tyrants, it's really unconscionable," said Holocaust survivor Walter Greenberg, 73, who lives in the county, only about 20 miles north of New York City.

Rabbi Michael Gisser, the executive director of the Holocaust Museum and Study Center in Spring Valley, called the gathering a "conference of hate."

"A lot of people that were there really want to destroy and kill Jews — from their agendas," Gisser said.

'10 Minutes of Infamy'

Rockland County is known for its rich Jewish diversity — members of every denomination, from the outwardly religious Hasidim to Orthodox, Conservative and Reform Jews, live here in the lower Hudson Valley.

But residents say Neturei Karta, led by Weiss, is a fringe operation that espouses views held by virtually no one else in the community — namely that Israel must be destroyed and put into Arab hands before the coming of the Messiah.

"He wants his 10 minutes of infamy," Greenberg said. "That's what it's about."

Neturei Karta, Aramaic for "guardians of the city," was founded in Jerusalem in 1938 as a splinter group of Agudas Yisroel, an anti-Zionist cell of Orthodox Jews founded 26 years before, according to the Neturei Karta Web site.

The group denies that they are "a small sect or an extremist group of 'ultra-orthodox' Jews," but rather are "fighting the changes and inroads made by political Zionism during the past 100 odd years," according to the site.

"Zionism is a fundamentally heretical movement which denies the Divine imperative that Jews remain in exile until the day when all mankind will be miraculously redeemed,” Weiss told a gathering of protesters in New York City in November.

The Neturei Karta's U.S. branch is based in a sprawling but dilapidated tenement in Monsey, a village ringed with strip malls boasting clothing bargains and fast-food shops that offer kosher pizza and falafel.

It's Jewish small-town America.

At a time when most Americans prepared to celebrate Christmas, menorahs twinkled from the tops of minivans as men dressed in black with long, curly side locks hitched rides home and bicyclists, their prayer-shawl tassels twisting in the wind, raced home for Hanukkah celebrations.

Rafael, a nearly 20-year resident of the community, said Neturei Karta has only a handful of members. He, along with other residents interviewed by FOXNews.com last week, declined to give their full names, fearing reprisals within the community.

"[Weiss] definitely does not represent any part of the Jewish community except for his little hole in the wall," Rafael said. "I really believe he should be considered a traitor to the country.

"This is a very, very good country and I think that someone who goes ahead and does what he does — hugs and kisses the enemy of the world — should be considered a traitor. Revoke his citizenship."

Weiss and his group have made headlines with protests in Washington and in photo opportunities with the Palestine Liberation Organization.

"Nobody embraces him," said Simon, a 10-year resident of Monsey who declined to give his last name. "The blood pressure goes up."

A woman who came to a door marked "Beck" at Neturei Karta headquarters Tuesday said Weiss did not live at the building. Other officials were not available for comment. Phone calls to Weiss were not returned.

But there was no denying that Neturei Karta had been in Tehran.

"We put effort into attending occasions such as this because we feel that we have both a religious and religion-based humanitarian duty to spread our message as much as possible," Rabbi Aharon Cohen said at the Holocaust conference, according to remarks published on the Neturei Karta Web site.

"He's still my customer," Rafael said of Weiss. "I'll take his money, but I'll be happy to see him go."

People Ask Questions

Most worrisome to Jewish leaders is the publicity machine that seems to follow Neturei Karta; photos of Weiss embracing Ahmadinejad garnered headlines around the globe.

"A rabbi kissing someone who considers himself the sworn enemy of Israel, which is the Jewish state," Gisser said. "People ask questions."

At Rockland County's Holocaust Museum — where photographs and artifacts from Auschwitz and other concentration camps are a poignant reminder of the dark depths of man's capacity for evil — the staff organized an evening rally Dec. 20 in support of the county's Holocaust survivors.

"These survivors who have survived such horrible things, they're incensed," said Roberta Lieman, the museum's administrator. "I was infected by it. I'm incensed."

Holocaust survivor Sonia Goldstein, 80, was one of several hundred people who attended the rally. She said she couldn't sleep the night she heard of the Iranian trip.

"How those people could go to Iran to face that Iranian Hitler and all the rest of the Holocaust deniers, I cannot understand that," said Goldstein, who tearfully recounted the day a Nazi offered a young boy hidden in the women's section of a camp a candy and then shot him in the head.

"This is up to the government and up to the Jewish organizations to do something against them," Goldstein said.

Groups like the Jewish Defense Organization are planning protests of Neturei Karta outside the group's headquarters. But Gisser said positive action is key for his museum's response.

"We have to teach our children for the next generation love and respect," he said, "and that will lead to peace."

That said, it's still hard to have anything but "zero patience" for Neturei Karta, and harder still to apply the Golden Rule toward the group's members and Weiss.

"Although I'm angry at him, I can't hate him either, because I don't believe that's a word that should be part of our lexicon," Gisser said.

"I'm angry more at his lack of understanding of the true values of Judaism."
